This module is renowned as one of the greatest D&D campaign modules for both beginners and experienced players alike. Expect a healthy mix of roleplay, creepy exploration, and meaningful combat as your characters grow from inexperienced adventurers into true heroes of the realm. Creating your character
Characters will be created during our first session using Roll20's beginner friendly creation tool. They will be level one, adventurous, and heroic. We'll use my copy of the 2024 Player's Handbook as a reference for character options, and I'll walk you through each step for a fool proof character creation experience. Also, I do have some premade characters if you just want to get stuck into playing. Any questions, please just reach out.
The current party is level 2 and consists of the following: - Nyra, a half wood elf cleric (played by Brandi) - Nettle, a wood elf paladin (played by Mon) - Fin, a halfling druid (played by Kieran) - Lughrik, a goliath fighter (played by Logan) - Aby, an aasimar monk (played by Michela) The party have just arrived in Phandalin so there's still PLENTY of story and fun moments to be had—you really haven't missed much.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
In preparation for this campaign, you'll need to have Discord and a DnD Beyond account. It's also worthwhile thinking of your character concept, their backstory. Starting at level 1 means they're not a hero... yet! What were they doing before they took this job? Why did they take this job? Spend some time answering questions like this ahead of session zero but remember to hold on lightly - prepare to be flexible with your ideas. You'll also need PHYSICAL DICE! Nothing beats the feel of a dice in your hand and the sound of those Nat 20s hitting the table. If you need dice, check out OnlyCrits.com and use my affiliate link GMKADE for a 15% discount.
What Kade Shiel brings to the table
My goal is to create a fun, welcoming, and memorable adventure for everyone at the table. I’ll guide you through the story, explain rules as needed, and make sure everyone feels comfortable taking part, no matter your experience level. I use character voices (often badly), descriptive storytelling, and imagination to bring the world to life. You’ll feel like you’re really exploring the frontier, meeting quirky NPCs, and facing dangerous foes. Combat is exciting but approachable. I strike a balance between tactical challenges and cinematic “Rule of Cool” moments, letting players shine while keeping the action flowing. I provide ambient music and custom artwork to enhance immersion and make encounters more thrilling. I prioritize a welcoming, inclusive environment where everyone can roleplay freely, ask questions, and have fun learning D&D together. Ultimately, my games are about story, fun, and teamwork. You’ll leave the table feeling like your hero truly made a difference in the adventure—and maybe even make a few new friends along the way.
Homebrew rules
I run the game using standard Dungeons & Dragons 5e rules, so new players can jump in without learning anything unusual. That said, I’m happy to bend the rules in the name of fun or storytelling—if you have a creative idea, I’ll often let it happen, as long as it keeps the game exciting for everyone.

Safety
How Kade Shiel creates a safe table
Creating a safe and welcoming table is a top priority for me. Before the adventure begins, we’ll have a Session Zero to introduce everyone, discuss expectations, and talk through any boundaries. During this session, I’ll explain how we handle sensitive topics and answer any questions you have about the game. I use an X card system that allows players to pause or skip content they’re uncomfortable with—digital, messaged, or held up on video—so you can always feel in control. At the end of each session, we’ll spend 10–15 minutes debriefing to check in with players, share feedback, and make sure everyone had a positive experience. My goal is to make sure all players feel comfortable, included, and able to focus on fun and adventure. Everyone’s safety and enjoyment comes first, so you can immerse yourself in the story with confidence.
