About the adventure

Play by Post - Asynchronous While this is a Call of Cthulhu game it is a ghost hunt not a monster hunt. Set in modern day England, the characters are all members of the Price Institute of Paranormal Studies who have been sent down to Dartmoor to investigate a ghost sighting. A group of archaeologists from the nearby University have been digging a site close to an old coaching inn on the edge of the moor, and seem to have disturbed a ghost horse that is proceeding to terrorise the archaeologist and the owner of the inn with its presence each night. This game involves a mystery to be solved rather than a monster to be fought. You will need to work out what has caused the ghost horse to appear now, is it linked to the archaeologist's dig site. What happened to cause a horse to become a ghost. Only when you have discovered the tale of the horse can you hope to put it to rest.

About me

I've been playing RPGs for roughly 35 years and GMing for 34 of those, I quickly realised i was happier behind the screen than in front of it. Originally it was for friends around the table, and then when Covid hit, I joined Roll20 and have been running games on there for the last 5 years. Over the years I have seen many changes in the hobby, from the crunchier systems, to the more mechanics light ones, from relying on books, to the increased use of the internet as a resource, from a time when being a female GM made me stand out in the crowd, to a the current era when the hobby is far more open to all. While some may debate whether crunchy or light system are better, whether books are better to internet, I think we can all agree that the increased inclusivity has added nothing but good to the hobby, and while not yet perfect, I hope the trend continues. I will also mention that while I do have some sight, I am Severely Sight Impaired. I do may best to not let it get in the way of what I want to do.

Character creation

Creating your character

Characters will be created in Roll20, and a macro will be available to the players so they can roll a set of stats easily All Characters will be members of the Price Institute of Paranormal Studies giving them a reason to investigate together. Characters will be rolled according to the standard Call of Cthulhu 7th edition rules, however if 3 or more of your rolled stats are 45 or lower you have the option to reroll the whole set of stats (you can't just reroll the low ones). You can keep rerolling until you have no more than two stats 45 or lower. Occupations can be chosen from the main rules, but players should keep in mind that the game is set in the UK in 2025 so some occupations will not be applicable and others will need to be adapted to fit. The UK also has incredibly strict weapons laws which should be taken into account. The Institute will provide a certain amount of equipment and pay for overnight accommodation while on an investigation. I use a house rule for Credit Rating and how much cash a character has available to buy other equipment if needed.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players will need to have a Roll20 account (a free one is fine), and a Discord account. As this is play by post, Tupperbox is also useful for speaking as your character in game. Characters will need to be created before the game starts.

What Oenanthe brings to the table

This is a Play by Post game, so there are no actual sessions and posting is asymmetrical. The Discord Server set up for the game will be divided into in character and out of character channels as well as information channels. Private channels will be created as needed. I will normally post once or twice a day (sometimes more) in response to player's posts. Dice rolls will be made using a Dice bot in Discord. All rolls will be made privately, and occasionally some will be made by myself

Homebrew rules

Credit Rating, Life Style and Spending Limit I have a house rule for Credit Rating, which covers a characters lifestyle, and their Spending Limit. As this is a modern game, Cash is less significant as most of the time purchases will be made with a card or phone and your cash safely in the bank. Ffull details are in the Roll20 game and the Discord Server.

Safety

How Oenanthe creates a safe table

Lines and Veils will be available on the Discord Server and in the Roll20 game. All players are welcome to talk to me about adding to the Lines and Veils, and as long as they are not something that is a major part of the scenario, then I'm happy to oblige. A set of server rules is also available on the Discord Server and in the Roll20 game. Should any player feel uncomfortable or have a problem with the game, my gming style or another player they are welcome to contact me privately. The issue will then be addressed without anyone else knowing who raised it.
