About the adventure
Step into the grim and perilous world of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, 1st Edition. This is a dark, low magic setting inspired by the late medieval and early Renaissance, far closer to real history than heroic high fantasy. The tone and culture echo the Holy Roman Empire, where tradition, superstition, and social structures shape everyday life. This is a world where magic is feared and rare, corruption seeps into every institution, black powder weapons and spellcasting can be dangerous to their users. In this campaign, Chaos does not arrive with banners and armies, it whispers in taverns, back alleys, and dreams. Every choice carries weight, and every death is final. This campaign is ideal for players who want rich narrative, investigation, and gritty immersion without excessive system bloat. First Edition is less crunchy than later editions, focusing more on atmosphere, mystery, and consequence than on combat math, while still offering deep and meaningful subsystems that reward thoughtful play and support the story. Expect a low fantasy experience grounded in human struggle. The setting is harsh and believable, but filled with options. The characters develop but remain unsung heroes of a world tethering on the abyss. We will be playing the full Enemy Within campaign, beginning with Enemy in Shadows and continuing through Death on the Reik, Power Behind the Throne, and finally The Horned Rat. This is a slow burn epic in which some plots take the entire four book arc to fully mature, and early decisions may only reveal their true consequences much later. The story grows darker, more complex, and more personal with each chapter. Characters are not static heroes but people shaped by fear, ambition, and survival. Over time, each character will experience a strong and meaningful arc driven by choices made under pressure in a world that does not forgive mistakes. If you are looking for heroic power fantasy, this is not that game. If you want deep immersion, lasting consequences, and a grim world where stories are earned rather than guaranteed, welcome to the Old World.

Starting my fifth run of The Enemy Within. I use the 1st Edition rules with fan made upgrades as well as borrowing from later editions. In case you have no idea, it is a d100 systems with modifiers. You roll under. Combat is deadly. Magic and firearms can misfire. In terms of lethality and epic - is similar to Pulp Cthulhu. The campaigns as written were influenced by Call of Cthulhu, the miniature Warhammer Fantasy, Mounty Python and draw from the Holy Roman Empire in a fantasy Renaissance. Perfect for quick thrills or trying something new! - I run short campaigns as well, typically 5-8 sessions. We are busy adults after all! These can be of any type. So read the description as I tend to run different games styles, sometimes "experimental". - Epic Campaigns, I am running a D&D 2024 campaign in person on a fortnightly basis with friends. We upgraded the rules with good ideas from other editions. The whole homebrew changes are known to the players and available digitally. Among others, we are using the Compendium of Careers from Ed 2.
