About the adventure

Why are the dead rising? Why do some of them come back with memories of being alive, while others are frenzied and animalistic? Why would the gods allow for this to happen? Explore the mysterious reason for this apocalypse, meet cultists and new religious movements trying to find meaning in this new world order, survive the apocalypse, interact with divine entities, and reverse the ! This is a horror campaign that asks the question: what if the dead didn't stay dead? Spontaneous necromancy affects all, as dead bodies reanimate before they even get cold. Most nations have broken down into smaller, mid-apocalyptic communities. The party will be intimately connected not only to the solution of the problem, but also to it's cause... I look for players that want to embrace the emotional game of the world as they knew it breaking down. The combat will be unforgiving, the undead endless and character death an omnipresent threat. A tactical mindset will be necessary to survive what's coming.

About me

I am a worldbuilder, roleplayer, LARPer, actor, musician, linguist and obviously a nerd. I have been roleplaying and LARPing ever since childhood. In high school I was introduced to more formal, structured tabletop roleplaying and I was hooked from day 1; doing what I always wanted to do with friends who are equally invested was a blessing. Ever since then, TTRPGs have become a special interest. Something is always happily bubbling in the back (and often the forefront) of my mind and some ideas simply require to meet the paper, be it a setting, a character, an event, next quest for my players, part of a fantasy ecology or another way to help my roleplaying groups to tell the stories we want to tell together. I am a staunch believer in the "collaborative" part of "collaborative storytelling", where I encourage everybody at the table to be equally invested in not just small parts of a story, but its overarching whole. It is really important to me that all my games are friendly, respectful and considerate to everyone at the table.

Character creation

Creating your character

We will be using the updated rules for D&D 5e 2024. All updated player options are valid. Any yet unupdated options and playtest material needs to be preapproved. If you are interested in playing something unofficial or homebrewed, feel free to ask me about it and I'll gladly homebrew something for you to help you play out your fantasy! The characters will start at level 3, point buy for ability scores, unless the table decides that they want to roll for stats. The characters will have the standard equipment options + 200 gp, that they can buy any mundane equipment or common magic items with. For session 0, bring 3 rough character concepts.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Make an account on Discord and Roll20. For session 0, I want every player to bring 3 character concepts that they would be excited to play. Then, we will see how well the different character options fit with each other and create a party together. A character concept is not a fully fledged backstory, but something that could be summarised in a sentence or two: "a nervous cleric of Kelemvor, the god of the dead, frightened by the apocalypse, on a zealous quest to fix everything." or "a halfling woman who has lost almost everybody in the First Rising, but was saved by a close friend, never wanting to be separated from them again." or "a dual-wielding strength-based rogue-barbarian multiclass focusing on skill checks and silent rage".

What Kaj brings to the table

I will work together with you to create a living and complex character with intriguing connections, exciting goals and an important place in the larger story. I provide a vivid world, with deep NPCs, grand stories and far-stretching implications and consequences. All of my combat encounters pose a significant threat to the party, otherwise they are relegated to a montage or narration. I am a homebrewer at heart, so you can expect new monsters, obstacles, items, curses, and player options (if you would like to play out a fantasy different from what the official material makes available). Mechanically, I strive for consistency in my rules and rulings, so that everybody can always know what to expect. If something works once, there is no reason why it wouldn't work again.

Homebrew rules

Crit rules: maxing out all of the damage dice and then rolling them again. Resurrection: after being brought back from the dead, the character permanently marks a failed death saving throw. 0 Hit Points: after falling to 0 hit points, gain 1 level of Exhaustion.

Safety

How Kaj creates a safe table

During session 0 we go around the table and share themes that we do not want to encounter during the games at all (Lines) and themes that we don't want to encounter directly (Veils) but are fine with the themes existing in the background. We write those down in a document that is shared with everybody and that everybody is expected to adhere to. We also decide on a sign to use during the session, in case someone's comfort zone has been crossed, like holding up a piece of paper on camera.
