About the adventure

Once a year, Professor Oak sponsors aspiring trainers from Pallet Town who are looking to embark on a Pokemon Journey through the Kanto region. In this Gen 1 Inspired Campaign, players will be members of the most recent cohort of aspirants in a world where the trainers Red and Blue do not exist. There will be additions and tweaks along the way, but players in this campaign can expect to play through a story that draws heavily from games like Red, Blue, Yellow, Fire Red, and Leaf Green. Challenge the original 8 gyms, thwart Team Rocket’s schemes, challenge the Elite 4, and find out who will become the next Pokemon Champion. Who will be the very best? Session 0 is Free! This game will use the Kairos Edition of PTU 1E, a ruleset with a few tweaks from the original PTU with many quality of life changes and fun additions (for example, each Researcher Branch has also been expanded into their own Class). We will use Roll20 as our Virtual Tabletop for visuals and dice rolling, Discord for voice chat, and a Kairos PTU Google Doc for book-keeping automation.

About me

I am an Australian teacher who has over a decade of experience with ttrpg, both as a player and Storyteller, across well over a dozen systems. When I run games, I endeavour to strike a firm balance between the game mechanics and rule of cool, often letting the game system guide how much I lean into one or the other. Ultimately, the fun and safety of everyone on the table is my top priority, so I try to reach a consensus on game expectations in Session 0 and utilize tools like lines and veils to ensure my players are having a consistently good time.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation will happen as part of Session 0. You will begin as a Level 1 Trainer with a Level 5 Starter Pokémon. Upon joining the game's Discord Server, you will be provided with a copy of the Rule Book to go over some options, but generally speaking the System has enough options to convert a character concept appropriate to the Pokémon universe into a character. Does your trainer like to focus training their Pokemon before battles? There are options for that. Does your trainer prefer strategic in-the-moment ploys? There are options for that. Do they prefer to focus on a single type, a single stat, or enjoy Pokemon grooming or even crafting fun outfits for their Pokemon? There are options for all of that. In PTU you will mix and match abilities from up to FOUR of the available classes. If you have a character concept, good odds we can make it work. As an important note, your character will be at least 18- Anime tropes aside, this simple change allows our table to avoid touching upon subjects involving the campaign challenges and threats regularly involving children which, in my opinion, will be better for everyone. Your starter Pokemon should not be legendary, mythic, or a pseudo legendary (like Dratini). They should also possess the Underdog quality (be below a certain base stat total) and be able to evolve at least once. While the majority (but certainly not all) of the Pokemon encountered in the wild in this campaign will be Kanto natives, this is not a restriction for your starters.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need a Google Account, a Roll 20 Account, access to Discord and a working microphone.

What Chris brings to the table

The game will feature nostalgic GBA maps, an interactable Kanto map, music, custom maps for gym battles and the like; as well as music, challenging gym battles, a focus on involving Pokémon personalities and much more. I have been a fan of Pokémon since I was a kid and getting the vibe right is important to me.

Homebrew rules

As noted, we will be using an expanded version of the original PTU ruleset.

Safety

How Chris creates a safe table

We will be using Lines and Veils as well as the traffic light cards built into Roll20. I also have an open door policy when it comes to discussing any concerns players may have regarding the game.
