About the adventure

Danger has been brewing in the blackwood. The ancient forest whose trees are withered blackened husks that refuse to die. Where the goddess Melora was slain during the Second Holy War, her death forever warping and changing what was her greatest treasure and sanctuary into a twisted realm of undeath and horror. It is rumoured that the mother goddess wept for the death of her child, and one of her tears fell into the heart of the Blackwood. This artifact of immense power, the Tear of the Goddess, is said to be containing the foulest of the darkness at the heart of the forest, so deep in the dark woods that no one has ever returned who has gone seeking it. The city of Corka has sat beside the Blackwood since its founding. A bastion against the dark and the last stop off before the perilous trek down the Brigantia River to the sea, the capital's only connection to the sea. Should anything happen to Corka it would spell terrible times for the kingdom of Talamhdanu, and something in the Blackwood is poised to spell out the city's doom. They came out of nowhere, a shambling horde of undeath the likes of which the city has never seen before. They struck from within, rising from the catacombs and out of the ship yard where dark forces had smuggled in corpses. They set the city ablaze and opened the gates to let in the army from the Blackwood. It took every able-bodied person in the city to repel such a ruthless and sudden attack, but at a heavy cost. Corka lies on the brink of destruction, and help may not arrive in time to save them. The leader of the city, Prism Hartfield, is calling on any able-bodied fighters left in the city, brave enough for a last-ditch effort to save the city. At the heart of the Blackwood lies the long-abandoned Temple of Melora, rumored to be where the Tear of the Goddess is housed. The attack on the city was caused by the necromancer Male'kesh, whose forces attacked the city so that none could stop him as he went after the Tear. Male'kesh must not be allowed to get his hands on the Tear, or else the kingdom may have yet darker days on the horizon. Is there anyone left courageous enough to venture into the heart of the Blackwood and stop the evil necromancer before it is too late? Necromancers, a city in peril, adventure through a haunted forest, and a dead god. All this and more awaits in this adventuure.

About me

I am an avid tabletop gaming enthusiast and have been my whole life. I grew up reading and watching fantasy and sci-fi, playing every board game and card game I could, and lots of video games. When I was 13, I was introduced to D&D 3.5 in middle school and have been playing and DMing on and off for 20 years (Mostly DMing XD). I have played all forms of D&D except for original 1e, Vampire the Masquerade, BESM, both Star Wars tabletop systems, Pathfinder 1e & 2e, Mutants & Masterminds, and made and played numerous systems of my own design. I have played mostly homebrew and LOVE worldbuilding, writing campaigns and stories, and integrating my players' characters into my worlds, stories, and campaigns. I've made and played 1 shots, short campaigns, and campaigns that lasted 2+ years and went from lvl 1 - lvl 20. I also enjoy homebrewing, though that can have varying degrees of success, but I am always open to trying new games and mechanics and receiving feedback on what did and did not work. I think stories are an integral part of the human experience and would love to create new stories with new players. p.s. I want to start with D&D 5e (2014 or 2024) as it is the only system I have run recently, but as I get my feet under me on this site, I would be willing to review and pick up other systems as well.

Character creation

Creating your character

Players will build their own characters. Use Roll20 for character creation and your character sheet. We will be using the 2024 rules. We will roll for stats. Roll 4d6, take the highest 3, reroll all 1s. Do this 6 times and allocate them as you see fit. For HP, we will take max for the first level, and roll for all following levels, rerolling all 1s. We will be playing at level 6. Starting equipment is your basic starting equipment from your class or background, 1 uncommon magic item, 1 uncommon magic weapon, and a potion of greater healing.

What to expect

What Dane Salyer brings to the table

Rules are tools to help us tell a story, but the Rule of Cool means those tools are very malleable. I will do voices, but I am no professional voice actor. I hope you will still enjoy them. For music and ambient sounds, I will be using Kenku FM. Prepare for pirate and Celtic-themed fantasy music! I quite enjoy homebrew. While classes will remain from the 2024 rules, I am open to suggestions for legally obtained or free-to-use third-party materials.

Homebrew rules

Drinking a potion is a bonus action. If you cast a spell as an action, you may cast a bonus action cantrip, and vice versa.

Safety

How Dane Salyer creates a safe table

In the discussions before the game begins, I will ask all players for lines and veils. X, N, & O cards will be held up on screen. I will review ASL signs for these letters for players to hold up, or players may make their own cards to hold up.
