About the adventure

The Holy Roman Empire’s days are numbered. Under the banner of the empire, bloody elders rule the land with an iron fist. The Ventrue clan has established a bastion of power in the Kingdom of Germany, led by Hardestadt the Elder. Beneath his watchful eye, the Road of Kings flourishes and knights of the Black Cross find glory. But all is not perfect within the Kingdom. To the West and South, Cologne and Frankfurt buck his rule. Courts begin to rival his power and tensions rise. In the Rhon Mountains, stuck between these two factions of the clan, an opportunity has arisen. Near the Els river and a growing population, trade flourishes and settlements grow. In the ripe land, Burg Schäfer, a castle overlooking the river and nestled on the side of a mountain, a Ventrue Lord named Heinrich Weiss has put out a call to enterprising coteries. Heinrich is granting territory and economic boons to those who can convince him that they are worthy. Your sires have found this opportunity too good to pass up. Despite the tense air in the region, the income and influence that could flow into their coffers outweigh the risk. They have sent you to find a way to sit at the Ventrue’s table. Success will mean access to some of the most powerful courts in the Holy Roman Empire—and perhaps the ear of Hardestadt, himself. But, maybe, just maybe, somewhere in this devil’s bargain, you can find freedom and power for yourself. As a long winter starts to settle over the Rhon Mountains, you will have plenty of time to scheme. Provided you survive. Welcome to the Dark Medieval World. Fire on the Mountain is a play-by-post chronicle about vampiric politics, intrigue, and bloody hands. No one within the Dark Medieval world is innocent. Everyone dirties their hands to survive. In this game, players take the role of childer of ambitious sires—sires who see raw opportunity in gaining access to the courts of the Holy Roman Empire and the legendary Ventrue Hardestadt. This chronicle will explore kindred politics, fears, clan divisions, and finding freedom from oppressive elders. In a remote castle in the depths of winter, characters are in close proximity to other predators and vie for resources such as allies and influence.

About me

Hey, everyone! I'm a long-time player of D&D and other games. I started running games shortly after I began playing because I simply love telling stories. I've worked in various research fields and currently work in higher education. I also stream and write freelance on the side. I've run LARPs and tabletop games for over twenty years and I still love the rush when people are having fun around the table. I was a contributing writer to the Black Ballad, a 5E full campaign book by the Storyteller's Forge as well as a developmental editor for the project. I have worked with the Obsidian and Shadow Nations games from Apophis Consortium, primarily in their Europe setting. I have also published best selling sourcebooks on Drivethru RPG through the Storyteller's Vault program for community content (Sword of Caine: A V5 Guide to the Sabbat as well as the V20 Baali Clanbook). Additionally, I run Los Muertos Games on Twitch and Youtube, but updates on Youtube are scarce due to time constraints. I enjoy telling collaborative stories and giving each player a spotlight during the game. We're all here to have fun and roll some dice, and it's always better when we all feel included. It's rewarding as a GM and awesome as a player to see others just having a blast at the table. Those are the stories I love to tell--the ones where everyone gets to shine and contribute to the overall narrative that we're creating. Let's get together and tell some stories.

Character creation

Creating your character

Characters can be created before the game or during the session 0 week. If you are unable to attend session 0 for whatever reason, the Storyteller will go over your character with you. If you need help to go through the creation process, simply reach out and I will be happy to help you through it. We will be using the Dark Ages: Vampire 20th anniversary book and accompanying supplements. Other materials are strictly a case by case basis.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

A discord account will be required to play our game as it takes place on a discord server. I have numerous dice bots on our server that can be used for dice rolling. Fillable PDF character sheets will be provided to players for character record keeping.

What Ray Jenkins brings to the table

I will bring images for setting scenes as well as atmospherics in terms of music and the like when needed. I have access to all of the DA20 and V20 books, so if there is something you want to play outside of the core book, we can certainly talk about it. I am a story-oriented storyteller, so I enjoy rich narrative approaches to characters and scenes. I tend to stick to rules as written--however, the rules will not get in the way of a fun or cool story. I consider myself flexible when considering the needs of the story vs. rules as written. *Two to Three Posts Each Weekday:* I will post at least two to three posts per day. Each post will be multi-paragraph on average. This rate can increase dramatically during combat scenes. On weekends I will post as I can, but posting throughout the day is not a thing I can guarantee as I am with my family. *Narrative Freedom:* Coming from a text-roleplaying background, I do not mind if players make small changes to a scene for dramatic effect or impact. If the game is not in a current combat scene, I highly encourage roleplaying between characters. For example, if the game has wrapped a combat scene and two players want to have a scene in a safe room discussing things or delving into their characters, I more than welcome this. I encourage it. Side scenes such as this can really be rewarding in terms of character growth and exploration. *Engaging Story and Drama:* Vampires often have a soap opera for a life. From wild action to heartache, betrayal, and revenge, they run the gamut of theatre. I expect to fully explore some of these themes in our time together. *Open Table and Respect:* Scenes can be intense and can sometimes impact us in ways we do not expect. If a player needs to step away for a bit to process something from the game or needs to discuss something, I have an open door. If you need to take a break for personal or other reasons, let me know. I don’t take offense to it. We can figure out a way to move forward, be it putting your character on hiatus and saving your seat, or having you temporarily leave and return later. Whatever works best for you.

Safety

How Ray Jenkins creates a safe table

Session 0 will be character and coterie creation alongside the establishment of goals for both narrative and characters. A Lines and Veils document will be provided to fill out and we will establish a master document for the chronicle. This game has an open-door policy. If you need to step away due to discomfort or to take a breath due to a scene, there will be no in or out-of-game consequences. Regarding Aftercare: After emotionally intense sessions or scenes, we will always be sure to check in to make sure everyone is doing good and to see if we need a break. We will have a debriefing at least every other session to see how people are doing and to give an open forum for feedback or concerns. You will note that the content warning for this game is particularly long. This is because there are a LOT of things that can come about in a World of Darkness game. I do not generally shy away from these things, however, our Lines and Veils document will override any content above if it is a line for a player.
