About the adventure
Welcome to Barovia, a land drowned in mist, memory, and dread. This is Curse of Strahd reimagined through the Daggerheart system, played entirely asynchronous Play-by-Post on Discord. Step into a gothic tale of desperation, hope, terror, and the slow unraveling of your character’s fears and desires. Across this campaign, you will feel the weight of every choice as Barovia shapes itself around your actions. Typical journey begins as the mist pull adventurers from the world they knew and deposit them in a realm controlled by the ancient vampire Strahd von Zarovich, whose presence is felt in every shadow. Yours might be different. Daggerheart brings his domain to life in a new way—your Hope and Fear, your Origins, and your Bonds matter deeply. Battles are dangerous, moral choices carry real weight, and roleplay takes center stage. Expect tension, mystery, and moments where your character’s flaws are just as important as their strengths. The tone of the campaign adapts to your group. It can lean dark and grim, filled with dread like Stranger Things or The Haunting of Hill House. Above all, the focus is on rich character arcs, impactful storytelling, and a world that responds to you. This is a Play-by-Post campaign, ideal for players who enjoy writing, slow-burn tension, and deeply personal storytelling. All characters will be created using Daggerheart. Sheets are built in Demiplane Nexus (I’ll share access). A dedicated Discord server hosts the game threads, downtime scenes, and roleplay channels. Beginner friendly, no matter if you are new at Daggerheart, clueless about Ravenloft and Strahd, or have never play-by-post. The mists are calling. The question is not whether you will survive Barovia… …but what it will make of you.

About me
Hello! I'm DM Mat, a game master with over 35 years of experience behind the screen. I started with Advanced Dungeons & Dragons and have played through every era up to D&D 5e 2024. Over the decades I’ve run countless stories across many worlds — from grim mysteries to wild planar adventures to hilarious improv-driven chaos. I really enjoy a wide cast of pro DMs, but Chris Perkins and Acquisitions Incorporated stand out to me: energetic, improvisational, character-driven, and always adapted to the tone of the table. Sessions can be serious, heroic, comedic, dark, or a mix — whatever brings out the most fun for the group. I run one-shots, long campaigns, play-by-post games, sandbox explorations, West Marches, and reimagined official modules like Curse of Strahd, Storm King’s Thunder, Tomb of Annihilation, Descent into Avernus, Rise of the Runelords, Kingmaker, and Age of Worms. I also love Eberron, Planescape, Faerûn, and fully homebrew worlds. I mostly run games in French or English as suits the current party. In my games, both newcomers and seasoned heroes are equally welcome. I can also run games for your group or a private event — just inquire, we acquire. Above all, my tables are respectful, collaborative, and focused on shared enjoyment. If you love exploration, memorable characters, surprising twists, and a relaxed but immersive atmosphere, I’d be happy to welcome you to the adventure.

Creating your character
We’ll be using the core Daggerheart book, and characters will start at 1st level for this adventure. You can build your character in Demiplane Nexus (I can share the book with you there), and once you’re finished, I’ll transfer it into FoundryVTT. Note that the Nexus sheet won’t remain linked to Foundry, but that’s totally fine — once it’s imported, we’ll only use the Foundry version. Once there are enough players to start the game, if everyone agrees, we could create characters together in session 1 if chosen so. I will set up a Discord channel for the game, where we can discuss character ideas, tone, and any mechanical questions. You’re welcome to DM me directly on Discord if you want help refining your concept or connecting it to the campaign’s themes. We won’t have a full Session 0, but the first part of Session 1 will cover tone, setting, safety tools, expectations, and party cohesion. Once everyone feels comfortable and excited, we’ll jump straight into the adventure!
What to expect
Preparing for the session
You will need a Discord account for between session communications, and for Voice in session. For Play-by-post, you will not need to access Foundry VTT and it is possible to play only with a mobile phone on Discord. The game will be run on Foundry VTT, you would need a tablet or desktop for best experience, running Foundry on a mobile is not recommended. If you have a Demiplane - Nexus account, then I can share you the Daggerheart book should you need it.
What DM Mat brings to the table
This campaign is mostly Theater of the Mind, with imagery to open your imagination. Some grid might be used for clarity when appropriate. I sometimes use music and ambiant sounds, but from my experience, many players just turn it off on their side as it is often a distraction. I usually don't play with webcam, if all the group prefer to play with webcam, we can turn it on for online sessions.
Homebrew rules
This game will incorporate some special rules to make it more in tune with the tone of the setting. Rest will not restore as much, Hope might become more limited, and some lingering effects and corruption might affect your characters.

How DM Mat creates a safe table
In session 1 (0) we will go over the safety tools we use and explain how to use each one. We will go throught Lines and Veils for everyone, then in each session, breaks, safety cards and Stars + Wishes will be used. Everyone deserves to feel safe and respected, no exception.
