About the adventure

It is the year 1197. Transylvania is a bloody land - wild and untamed by the standards of the west. By day, the brutal yoke of feudalism exhorts a heavy toll on the peasants, serfs and burghers that call this dark corner of Europe home, but it is at night when the true horrors emerge. frightened mortals bar their windows and doors, and make sure to keep the hearth fires burning, because they know that when darkness falls packs of accursed predators creep from the woods looking for blood. Worse still are the wretched nobles who never seem to be around when the sun is high at the sky, but who ride forth in the black of night to torment those unlucky enough to be abroad. The very land itself seems cursed - pulsing with corruption emanating from the beat of some unseen black heart. But Transylvania is on the cusp of a great change. The power dynamics between the undead are shifting slowly but surely, and there is great opportunity for those younger vampires - as of yet unaffected by the ennui and stasis of age - clever or ruthless enough to seize the moment and enhance their own power and status. --- This is a chronicle that starts in 1197 and will see the PCs play a coeterie of fledglng vampires. Initially the pawns in others' schemes they will have the opportunity to rise in status and power. This will be a chronicle of ages, meaning that we will jump around in time, allowing players to develop their characters and get the feeling of a long, immortal lifespan. Also, given that players will start as neonates I intend this to be very beginner friendly. If there is sufficent interest, there will be provision for new players to join as the game progresses - perhaps as the childer of existing characters. Won't that be fun? ;) The overall length of the campaign will be based on player interest. I'm very theatre of the mind and roleplay heavy. This is not a tactical wargame. I'd much rather hear you describe the cool things your character intends to do rather than "Er...I move my counter four hexes that way." Vampire is, by nature, a dark game of personal horror. One of it's themes is that of "the beast within" so there will be moments where your character may lose agency. However, this is a game where we want everyone to have fun - therefore, a session 0 is essential to talk about boundaries, triggers etc. I aim for my games to be safe and fun for all involved, so I take these sessions seriously. Finally, it goes without saying that everyone is just here to have a good time. There will be zero tolerance of anyone who seeks to be disruptive, offensive or make other players uncomfortable. This is pretendy-fun-time-games (albeit in a dark horrible world) so please no racism, sexism, homophobia or any of that other awful stuff.

About me

Long time GM - I started in the 1980s and have been the "forever GM" since then. Honestly, I have more fun running games than playing so I'm looking forward to sharing that love with others! I'm definitely not a rules heavy GM - I'm much more about letting players explore their characters and interact, and I'm happiest when I'm sitting back listening to interparty drama! Over the years I've run a ton of different systems with a heavy focus on World of Darkness. However, remember that part about loving interparty drama? Well, my favourite games to run are Paranoia and Alien - I love myself a bit of PVP and these settings perfectly let players explore this aspect of TTRPGs safely! When it comes to running games, I'm a massive fan of music and sound effects and I love using them to help build atmosphere. So, if you fancy checking out games that are slightly different from D&D (although I can happily run that too!) please let me know!

Character creation

Creating your character

This will be covered off as part of session 0. I will provide some historical background for the setting, and players will be invited to come up with HUMAN character concepts. As you will all be playing neonates I'm honestly more interested in who you were BEFORE becoming a vampire than what clan you want to play. Speaking of which, there will be a list of clans to choose from - this is intentional due to the plot. If your favourite clan isn't there, I'm sorry. Likewise, I won't be allowing players to play any of the obscure bloodlines. As for disciplines, players will be limited to starting with their in-clan disciplines and none will be able to start higher than 2. Finally, I'll have curated a list of merits and flaws that can be chosen.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

I will provide access to the Discord server / VTT.

What Iain brings to the table

As mentioned in my bio, I LOVE games that are roleplay heavy and I love it even more when my players get into drama with each other and the NPCs. The game will be much more foucsed on politics and roleplay than it will be combat. In fact, as long time Vampire players know, combat should pretty much be a last resort! I'm very much a theatre of the mind guy - I'd much rather hear you describe the cool things that you're going to do than have us play VTT Warhammer! Oh, and I love playing around with music. So expect a lot of that.

Homebrew rules

No real tweaks to the main system. But please be aware of the following: * Curated list of clans that players can choose from * Only being able to start with in-clan disciplines * Curated list of merits & flaws * No discipline may start higher than level 2 * All starting characters will be on Humanity - no roads / paths

Safety

How Iain creates a safe table

In session 0 we will go over what people don't want to see in the game. And there's no judgement here and you don't need to explain anything. If you don't want to see spiders in the game just say that and - POOF - no spiders. No need for anyone to dig into why. Likewise, I like to go over, at the end of each session, what people liked and what they'd like to see more of / less of. Also, my table is a safe space. If at any time anything makes you uncomfortable say so and we'll fade to black. Even though it's a horror game I'm not out to upset anyone. Obviously the same should go for interactions between players too.
