About the adventure

Learn to play the Fabula Ultima JRPG style system in the campaign "Fabulous Heroes, An Isekai Adventure"! Welcome to your next adventure! After tragically and/or dramatically expiring in your previous life, you have awoken in a strange new world with others who appear to be in the same situation as yourself. Your clothes are different, your hair feels... wrong, your body feels strange and there's something else you can't quite put your finger on. Wait... do you even have fingers? Is that a claw? Are those wings? And that person has horns! I don't think you are in Kansas anymore... Free Session 0 & 1 - learn the game before committing to it with a two session introduction to the system and the gameplay where we will learn the core mechanics, build out characters, and design our world together! Light-Hearted beginner friendly campaign with more focus on the characters and narrative collaboration to build out the world together. Enjoy background music and carefully created backdrops with interactive menus as we explore the world through Narrative collaboration using Theatre of the Mind. Easy, fast-paced JRPG Turn-Based Combat – learn your opponents weaknesses to bring them down and work together to form powerful combinations. Experience a video-game level of interaction with full animations, battlefield effects, music, and high quality sprites! Zelda-style dungeons giving a top-down map of the area with map markers to keep track of important rooms or puzzles. Solve riddles, move statues, and unlock ancient mysteries in the depths of hidden locations. Forge Bonds between characters and NPCs, gain allies or make rivals to gain powerful bonuses to aide you in your darkest hours. Full character portraits and unique NPCs for you to come across and interact with. Perhaps they may need your help with something? They might even know what caused you to come here in the first place. Each session will build on the previous, slowly growing the complexity of the narrative as well as the mechanics as they organically arrive through play. Start with the basics from the Core Rulebook and slowly build in from the other Atlases to add in camping, powerful heroic skills, and even unlock new class options as you explore new Realms. Find new treasures and create custom items from harvesting Monster Parts or gathering Materials in your travels. If you enjoy JRPGs like Final Fantasy or the Persona series; have a penchant for Isekai Anime such as Moonlit Fantasy, Jobless Reincarnation, or Grimgar; or are just looking for a new system to delve into without the stress of needing to know every detail right away, then you might find a good fit here. New players preferred, though all skill levels are welcome. This campaign will last until level around level 10 with the option to continue further should the desire be there.

About me

Hey there! Welcome to the Laughing Goat Tavern, I'm the barkeep and owner, Sylus - or at least that is the name I have adopted over the years. My real name has been lost to time. I have been the owner of this fine establishment for nearly 20 years and the stories I have collected in those years are too vast to recount here. My more frequent patrons tell me I should offer my stories and tales to a wider audience, so I have decided to join in this lovely guild of storytellers in the hopes of providing good times to those who seek it. I am well versed in many genres be it Action, Comedy, Mischief, Historical, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Romance, the odd Political Intrigue tale, and even Horror from time to time. I wouldn't say I have a particular fondness for any one type of tale, but my skills sway heavier towards lower fantasy, realism where survival is the key piece - stories that revolve around the lesser known heroes often not acknowledged. Heroes chosen by Gods are always good fun, but I find more enjoyment in giving praise to the group of citizens who rally against a goblin hoard or the local youths who banded together against a corrupt official - anyone who sets out to make a difference deserves to be recognized, no matter how small it may seem. My preferred vessel of telling these tales is through Foundry VTT/Discord using Fabula Ultima or a lighter version of 5e. So, if it takes your fancy, why not drop by sometime? I am sure you could bring a tale or two yourself.

Character creation

Creating your character

All characters will start at level 5 as per Fabula Ultima's rules and you will be choosing your classes based on the core classes at the start. More classes will become available over time but to avoid confusion and overloading information - we will be starting with core classes only. Fabula Ultima only cares about classes and where you put your die sizes, so races/species can be anything you want them to be - so long as you can provide an in-game reason for them existing and we build them into the lore of the world together. It wouldn't make much sense for us all to agree on a primarily High-Fantasy world and setting but have the character be a mecha-suit cyborg ninja. If you already have the books, great, if not, I will have them available within Foundry and the Journal section of the Discord will have short summaries of the classes posted to give an idea of their roles. Session 0 will be used to handle character creation alongside world building notes and distribution of safety notes and features but you are more than welcome to reach out before then and bounce ideas around or talk with others and get an idea for who/what you might want to be.

The current party

Currently we have a Loremaster/Tinkerer and a "Bardbarian Explorer". Plenty of room for fun!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

All you will need to do is join the discord - which the link will be provided to you once you sign up. The Foundry link will be provided within the discord closer to the start date.

What Sylus brings to the table

You can expect as close to a JRPG experience as can be provided with Foundry VTT and a non-scripted game. Backdrops will set the scene while we use Theater of the Mind to describe the details and interactions - maps of dungeons will be provided as simple room-to-room locations where a party icon will indicate which room that you are currently in. Ambient sounds and music will be provided for all scene to help set the tone and mood of any given location or encounter. Combat will be frequent should you look for it as all locations outside of safe-havens will have JRPG Inspired Random Encounters that can occur outside of normal travel rolls. Work with your team, learn the enemies weaknesses, and utilize the fast-paced turn-based action of Fabula Ultima's system to bring down even the more fearsome of foes efficiently. I reward careful planning and observation immensely with combat. While Fabula Ultima is a relatively rules light game compared to D&D, Pathfinder, and others - the rules are still there to help maintain balance and steady gameplay. I am not opposed to bending them should there be a good narrative reason for it and mistakes happen all the time - even on my end. Don't fret too much over the rules and instead focus on playing the game and having a good time - if something happens that requires a rules check and it cannot be handled quickly - we will be going with whatever is the most fun and then I will check the rules before the next session to correct it moving forward (or leave it alone if it was more fun for everyone). I run my games as Player-First Fail-Forward experiences. You should never encounter something that is impossible to do, or requires only one way to overcome. Even if you all fail, then progress will still occur - you may just have some issues with resources or status ailments to contend with - even if you lose a fight, there will always be something happening that will continue the story and move things forward. So do not be afraid to experiment and throw out some fun or strange ideas.

Homebrew rules

I do not currently use any homebrew rules with this system - that does not mean we won't make some on our own through playing or maybe find one or two that we want to adopt.

Safety

How Sylus creates a safe table

I have several systems within Foundry VTT that are set up for safety. Firstly we have a disclosure list that works as a kind of "lines and veils" with several topics listed and room for more. I use a "X's and O's" type of card system as well where players can press a button to stop play should something be too far or venture into uncomfortable territory. And of course, I always leave room at the end of each session for feedback, aftercare, or anything else that is needed or desired - as well as a full open door policy within Discord or SPG's DMs. I respond as quickly as I can and try to make myself available as often as possible. I know that the content warnings are a thing - but I honestly have no real earthly idea as to what can be expected within any given game, a typical rule of thumb is "If you could expect to see it in a mainline JRPG like Final Fantasy, then it has a strong chance of showing up somewhere." We will cover more potentials during Session 0, but I aim to keep things fairly tame and relaxed. Language/Cursing and violence are about the only things that are guaranteed to occur. Everything else we can discuss together.
