About the adventure

Under raging storm clouds, the vampire Count Strahd von Zarovich stands silhouetted against the ancient walls of Castle Ravenloft. Rumbling thunder pounds the castle spires. The wind’s howling increases as he turns his gaze down toward the village of Barovia. A lightning flash rips through the darkness, but Strahd is gone. Only the howling of the wind fills the midnight air. The master of Castle Ravenloft is having guests for dinner. And you are invited. The classic 5th edition campaign for levels 1-10 with a twist. The shadows of Barovia will be more foreboding, with a deadlier villain motivated by an even darker purpose. Your friendly GM experienced his first TPK on the wrong side of the DM screen in the original Ravenloft module when it was new. Having run the modern version a couple times, I've found it lacks a certain edge the original had, which I've made some changes to improve upon. Your time in Barovia will be more desperate, the ultimate foe more implacable. Difficult choices and moral compromises must be navigated to find the path back home from the mists of Barovia.

About me

I found my first Players Handbook under the Xmas tree long before they started numbering the various editions of any of these games, and have been playing ever since. I started DMing regularly for family and friends ten years ago, and soon branched out to offering games online, first as a side hustle and then as a full-time occupation. I like to explore every pillar of game play and have a particular liking for mysteries and puzzles, but I certainly know when it's time to roll dice and crunch monsters as well.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation and any game-related communication and preparation conducted in Discord game channel in days leading up to first game session to afford plenty of opportunity for preparation before play commences in first game session.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Character should be ready for first session of game. Webcam optional (DM often uses one, but it is not required for players). Game audio and other game related communication takes place via Discord.

What Craig brings to the table

Games will take place on Roll20 VTT with maps, all relevant resources available in game compendium, dynamic lighting and occasionally music. GM available for assistance with character creation.

Homebrew rules

Some modifications to environmental rules and creature stat blocks to make them more challenging. Narrative sense overrides RAW. For instance, getting a flask out of your pack, uncorking the bottle, and drinking the entire contents cannot be a bonus action-- taking your healing potions will always be a full action. Stuff like that.
