About the adventure
"How many of you do I need? Four? Five? Six? I mean I've never hired mercenaries before. I've had all kinds of employees - but never mercenaries! My goodness, the times we live in right now..." -Beatriz Hick'rybroom, a fussy halfling merchant, in the process of hiring you to protect her shipment of fine cheeses to the upcoming wine festival in Splendorvine. This is a neat little D&D 5e(2024) one-shot for 4-6 3rd level characters where player choices will be paramount to the final outcome. You'll take on the role of local heroes drawn into a tense situation involving a daring bandit and their strange accomplices; the heavy-handed authorities standing against them; and the locals caught in the middle of the whole mess.

About me
It’s 1994, and I’m sitting with a gang of my older brother’s friends in my parents’ garage around a ping pong table with the net taken down and a seemingly massive grid map laid over it. It’s cold and we have to wear coats. A fluorescent bulb flickers slightly a couple of feet above our heads and casts a harsh light on everything. In hindsight, I know that we didn’t have a ton of miniatures or scenery and it was all just crudely rendered wet-erase marker - but when I remember it, there are pine trees and grassy hills and jagged outcroppings of grey stone. My friends and I are fighting a coven of hags and their ogre minions. I don’t remember how the battle ended. I don’t even remember my character’s name or anything about them. But I remember those people in that room and that feeling of being together with them. I was hooked and I remain hooked on this hobby to this day.

Creating your character
Build a 3rd level character using only the options available in the 2024 Player's Handbook and the Standard Array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) for ability scores. Building characters is fun! But this is a one-shot so I'd rather you spend more time playing than building. I will also have several pre-generated characters ready to go in case you're short on time to make your own. This is not the game to try out playing an evil character or one that does not want to be part of a group. Backstory is less important in the context of a one-shot, though obviously whatever story you imagine for your character might inform their personality in terms of how you roleplay them. You will be adventurers hired to protect a shipment of goods moving from one place to another. Whatever your character's story is, it has brought them to this point. If your character has a familiar or other creatures they can summon, please give me a shout so I can prep that for you in Roll20. It doesn't take much time, but it does take Some, so a little lead time would be nice.
So far we have a Halfling Oath of Ancients Paladin, Halfing Berzerker Barbarian, and Dwarf Fighter.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
You will need: A free account on Discord to join the campaign server for text and voice chats. A free account on DNDBeyond for your character sheet. A free account on Roll20 to access the Virtual Table Top (VTT). Download the free browser extension Beyond20 to better integrate DNDBeyond with Roll20. I ask that you have a decent microphone and join our games from a quiet place with minimal background noise and distractions. Please configure your audio such that the signal has some fidelity to it and does not crackle, echo, or break up excessively.
What GM Delaney brings to the table
I come from 30 years of DMing experience and am a professional entertainer and storyteller by trade. I have no fear of embarrassment when it comes to embodying ridiculous or over-the-top NPCs. I pride myself on my tactics, and if it makes sense for the enemy to be ruthless and cunning, they absolutely will be. I want, above all, for you to have fun and feel welcome at my table.
Homebrew rules
I'll be trying my best to just run this game and all of my one-shots Rules as Written (RaW) for the sake of not having to spend a lot of time explaining things. That said, a ruling in a ruling and I don't want to spend my time and your time and the time of others arguing about rules at the table. I am very familiar with the rules, but there are A Lot of them and the 2024 revamp brings a bit more confusion just between what's the new rule vs the old one. I'd be foolish to say I don't have room to improve, even after all this time, but by gosh I am trying.

How GM Delaney creates a safe table
Bigotry will not be tolerated at my table. No racism, no misogyny, no homophobia, no transphobia - above table or in fiction. Respect people's identities and pronouns. This is not an overly edgy one-shot scenario, but there could be some emotional content. Please give people space to feel their feelings. Read the content warnings. X, N, and O cards with be discussed briefly before the game starts, and I'm available a bit before and afterwards via Discord chat if you have further things you'd like to discuss.
