About the adventure
Darkness has fallen over the lord’s estate, and something—something fast, vicious, and unseen—has begun hunting inside his own home. The lord has called for brave adventurers (that’s you!) to uncover the truth, track the creature, and put an end to the terror stalking the halls. This is a new-player-friendly D&D 5e adventure focused on exploration, mystery-solving, teamwork, and fun introductions to combat. No experience needed—I’ll teach you everything as we go. If you enjoy solving eerie mysteries, discovering clues, and battling monsters in a creepy medieval manor, you’ll fit right in. Grab your torch. Stay close to the others. And remember: The creature only hunts when the sun goes down.

About me
Hey there! Will I be your soon-to-be favorite Game Master? Well… let’s find out together. I’ve been playing for years and GM-ing on and off for the last few, picking up the pieces that make a game flow well. Outside the table, I spend a ridiculous amount of my free time storyboarding, worldbuilding, and crafting new adventures. Sometimes it’s short stories, sometimes full campaigns, but it’s always an excuse to build something fresh.

Creating your character
We’ll use Shard Tabletop for both character creation and gameplay, and Shard is completely free for players to use. I’ll send you an invite link to the campaign where you’ll create your level 1 character using the options I’ve provided, including the standard array for stats. You’ll have access to all the official 5e material I own in Shard, and you won’t need to purchase anything. Homebrew options must be approved to ensure they fit the tone of the adventure, but we can chat prior to work out all the kinks. Characters should match the dark mystery-horror vibe—think “Legolas and Gimli if they were the inspiration for Sherlock and Watson,” capable heroes with sharp instincts, grounded personalities, and a reason to investigate strange killings in a noble’s home.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Before our first session, players will need to set up two things: a free Shard Tabletop account and access to the game’s Discord server. I will assist with setup as needed just let me know. Shard will be used for character creation and as our VTT, while Discord will be our home for voice, chat, and between-session communication. You will receive both links in your confirmation email. Please join the Discord server and make your Shard account ahead of time so we can troubleshoot any technical issues early. Our first gathering will be a combined Session 0 / Session 1, where we’ll go over table rules, safety tools, expectations, and equipment setup. This is also a great time to finalize or build your character if you need help. The game will use a mix of Theatre of the Mind and Shard VTT play, with descriptive narration instead of music or heavy soundscapes. I am happy to assist with any Audio / Video issues prior to start.
What Evan brings to the table
I will provide an engaging, story-driven mystery where players work together to uncover who—or what—is killing within the lord’s own home. My GM style focuses on player involvement, clear narration, and collaborative storytelling. I aim to keep the game accessible, fun, and immersive, and I’m always open to player ideas and table feedback as we build the experience together.
Homebrew rules
The following rules are used to support smooth pacing, cinematic moments, and meaningful decision-making. These rules are always explained clearly at the table and applied consistently. Flexible Action Economy The game uses a flexible approach to actions to reduce unnecessary friction and keep play moving. In certain situations, the Game Master may allow actions to shift by one step in the action economy. Action Shifts An action may be adjusted one step up or down depending on the situation: Action ↔ Bonus Action Bonus Action ↔ Free Action An action will never shift more than one step at a time. Examples Drinking a prepared or readily accessible potion may be allowed as a Bonus Action instead of a full Action. Simple, well-practiced, or incidental interactions may be treated as Free Actions. Ability checks may require: A Free Action if reactive or incidental A Bonus Action if they require focus or timing A Full Action if they demand sustained effort or attention The Game Master determines the appropriate action cost based on preparation, positioning, time pressure, and environmental stress. Pushing Beyond Normal Limits In certain situations, a character may attempt to use an ability, spell, or feature even after its normal uses or resources have been exhausted. This represents pushing the body, mind, or spirit beyond safe limits. When doing so, the player must make a roll determined by the Game Master. The Difficulty Class (DC) is calculated as follows: DC = 8 + the cost of the ability being used For abilities that cost points, use the number of points spent. For spells, use the spell’s level. The Game Master may apply a situational modifier, typically no more than ±2, based on injuries, exhaustion, stress, environmental conditions, or repeated attempts. On a success, the ability functions as intended. On a failure, the ability does not function as expected and the character suffers a consequence appropriate to the effort, such as exhaustion, injury, or other narrative or mechanical effects. The risks of pushing beyond normal limits are always explained before the roll is made. This option is voluntary and intended for critical or dramatic moments.

Safety
How Evan creates a safe table
Player Safety, Comfort, and Boundaries This table is committed to providing a respectful, welcoming, and safe play environment for everyone. While the game may explore dark or intense themes, player comfort always comes first. Player Safety Tools This game uses the Deck of Player Safety from Demiplane. These cards provide players with an easy, unobtrusive way to communicate comfort levels, boundaries, or the need to pause or redirect a scene at any time. Players are encouraged to use these tools freely. No explanation or justification is required when a card is used. Mid-Session Break Each session includes at least one scheduled mid-session break. This break exists to: Step away from intense moments Check in with yourself and others Reset focus and energy Additional breaks can always be requested as needed. Respecting Boundaries If a boundary is signaled—through a safety card or direct communication—the scene will be adjusted, reframed, or skipped without debate or disruption. Boundaries are respected immediately and consistently. Using a safety tool will never result in penalties, judgment, or negative consequences in or out of character. Open Communication Players may raise concerns or feedback at any time: During the session In private messages Or between sessions You never need to explain why something is uncomfortable. Shared Responsibility Maintaining a safe table is a shared effort. Players are encouraged to look out for one another and communicate openly. The Game Master’s role is to listen, adapt, and ensure everyone feels comfortable continuing play. The story can change. Your comfort does not have to.
