About the adventure

You came to the City of Towers for a fresh start. Maybe earn fame and fortune working for one of the city's adventuring guilds... Your first job seems simple enough. Reclaim a piece of a statue. It seems some cultists broke into a noble's mansion and stole a prized object from their collection--a marble hand recovered from one of the city's ruined districts. Rumor is this cult is trying to reassemble the statue for unknown reasons. But that's none of your business. It's your job to recover it. Two hundred gold if you find the hand. Two hundred platinum if you can recover the whole statue! Too easy... Except nothing is as easy or straightforward as it seems. At least the pay is good... *** In this episodic level 3-10 campaign you'll have an opportunity to explore new character options from the latest D&D 5.5e release, Eberron: Forge of the Artificer (e.g., artificers, dragonmarks, changelings, mobile bastions, shifters, warforged, etc.), while exploring the fantastic Eberron setting in a series of thrilling adventures centered around stopping an evil cult's scheme of toppling an entire city and turning its people into mindless thralls. Join for big swashbuckling action, exciting pulp adventure, and a world powered by magic and layered in mystery. Stay for the adventure of a lifetime!

About me

Hello. My name is Shane. I was introduced to RPGs when I was 12 years old and was hooked from my very first session. I have been playing and running RPGs, on and off, for the past four decades and hope to continue for many more! I have run many different games and genres, but my favorite is fantasy RPGs. My GM strengths are involving players, improvising scenes, and game pacing. I have run games for a wide variety of players over the years. By my rough count, I have gamed with over 500 people and completed 31 longform campaigns. Finally, I would be honored to be your GM and take you on the adventure of a lifetime!

Character creation

Creating your character

City of Tales Character Creation Guidelines (5.5e Rules) Your characters will begin play at 3rd level and will be built using Standard Array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) or Point Cost (27 points) for Ability Scores. Notes about mixing 5e and 5.5e content: If there is a 5e option that has not been brought to 5.5e standards, you may select the 5e option. If any disparity exists, we’ll always default to 5.5e rules, e.g., if there is a feature that exists in both 5e and 5.5e and they are different--we’ll use the 5.5e version The following sources are 5.5e rules and are considered primary character building options: - Player's Handbook - Eberron: Forge of the Artificer - Frontiers of Eberron: Quickstone - Heroes of Faerun Additionally, these 5e sources may be used if there is no 5.5e equivalent. Please let me know if you intend on using material from any of these sources: - Chronicles of Eberron - Eberron: Rising from the Last War - Exploring Eberron - Mordenkainen’s Monsters of the Multiverse - Tasha's Cauldron of Everything - Xanathar's Guide to Everything Some notable character creation differences between 5e and 5.5e: Species (previously races) in older books include ability score increases. If you use a species from a 5e book, ignore those increases and use only the ones given by your background. Backgrounds in 5e D&D books don’t include ability score adjustments. If you’re using a background from an older book, adjust your ability scores by increasing one score by 2 and a different one by 1, or increase three scores by 1. None of these increases can raise a score above 20. Also, if the 5e background you choose doesn’t provide a feat, you gain an Origin feat of your choice. Lastly, we’ll be using Roll20’s character sheet for this campaign.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You'll need a desktop or laptop computer with a dedicated microphone for Discord voice chat. You'll also need a Discord account and a Roll20 account (both are free). Please note, Roll20 works best on a computer and doesn't work very well on a phone or tablet. You don't need to know how to play D&D, use Roll20, or Discord to join this game. I'll guide you through onboarding and make it easy to join this campaign. While it will be helpful if you already have rulebooks and/or know how to play--you don't need to. This is a perfect campaign for complete beginners!

What Shane brings to the table

Roll20 Pro access, high resolution game maps, dynamic lighting, customized character tokens, custom visual aids and handouts, full access to my D&D Roll20 rulebook library, automated character sheets and quality of life scripts for easy play, immersive background music, a Discord channel for Voice Chat, Five Word Session Summaries, and everything else required for you to have an amazing experience!

How Shane creates a safe table

I'll provide a Consent in Gaming checklist to establish our Lines & Veils. We'll discuss this during Session 0. We'll take a 10-minute bio break at the session's halfway point. I actively encourage player feedback during Stars & Wishes and will use that information to provide an exceptional player experience.
