About the adventure

This will be a short campaign set on a tropical jungle island. It's going to be a simple quest mission meant to allow players to get a taste of playing in a sandbox world, where you'll face fierce and mysterious creatures, factions that battle for power, and perhaps even the island's own dark history. Whether you play sandbox games exclusively, or this is your first dive into a game without a gm leading the story, you are welcome to explore this island of dangerous plants and nightmarish bugs. Just know that combat is used sparingly, jumping into a fight with everything you see will have you rolling up a new character faster than you can say "what do you mean an 18 doesn't hit?" As for the particulars, there's no official setting used. I'm using the setting from "The Dark of Hot Springs Island". It's just jumping into an adventure with very little outside world influence (no need to worry about countries or politics or lore). You work for a well known trading company, Martel. You'll have 7 in game days to complete a quest for your employers. •We're using 5e 2014 •If you're here for combat, you will not have fun •If you like to RP, this should be fun •This setting has adult content, there will be swearing, and please note the content warnings. This game is 18+, no exceptions •We will be using Discord for voice chat. Cameras are optional. •We will be using mainly theatre of the mind, potentially with pictures and maps as needed sent in Discord for reference.

About me

My name is Rae, and I was first introduced to playing role play games with my tattoo artist in 2019. I got into a lot of text based rpgs after that, especially during the pandemic, and I became very familiar with a lot of different systems, worlds, genres, and styles. Some I really enjoyed, and others I found I didn't enjoy as much. I've played over a hundred characters, from Elven edgelords to ba space mechanics to bubbly jesters. I've played in campaigns ranging from sci-fi, fantasy, modern, alternate reality, horror, pirate, and even more. I've been running games for almost as long as I've been playing, and have run nearly every style game I can think of, aside from gritty realism. My biggest focus is making sure everyone feels safe and has fun at my table!

Character creation

Creating your character

Please have an idea for the kind of character you would like to play, but we will build them together for cohesion. Character creation will be part of Session 0, along with going over safety tools, and if there is time afterwards we will begin the session. Having one or two ideas for a character will help speed that along to ensure there's time to begin playing. •Stats can be rolled (4d6 drop lowest), standard, or point buy, and can be done together or before hand. •You will be starting at level 2. •You will get max HP for both levels to accommodate a deadlier setting. •You can create your character sheet using whatever you prefer: paper, DnD beyond, 5E companion, etc. Just send me a copy or a picture on Discord. •Medium humanoids only for this game. •You may play an Elf, but it can have very drastic (and potentially deadly) consequences depending who you meet. •No Warforged, and nothing from Spelljammer. •Nothing tied to specific settings (Reborn and Dhampir are fine); no backgrounds specific to certain geographic locations. •Remember, there are many things on this island more dangerous than your characters. A character built only for combat or who tries to fight everything will not survive for long.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You'll need a Discord account for this game, as we'll be using it to play over voice chat (with optional camera). I have a Discord Server I'll invite you to as well. You'll also need a character sheet. You can use pen and paper sheets, or an app, whichever you prefer. I like the 5e companion app, or there's Prism which is also a good one. Just some kind of sheet, but I'll also have a character sheet linked in the server in case someone can't find a sheet to use.

What Rae brings to the table

I am by no means a voice actor, but I do enjoy doing character voices! Some of them are better than others, but it's fun and I find it helps tell NPCs apart. I love role playing, and lean far more into that than on reliance on dice rolls. I don't like to focus heavily on combat. There will be some of course! But it will take a back seat to the adventure and storytelling. I do enjoy Rule of Cool, especially if you can explain why something could work. Now, I still think it should make sense. Rolling a nat 20 to flap your arms if you fall off a cliff will not make you fly, but maybe it allows you to catch yourself on brush on the way down. I believe dice should support the story, not run it. They are critical in combat, and help decide the outcome of something that is uncertain. But some things work much better as a description. Your bard doesn't need to roll performance to play their instrument by the campfire winding down, instead tell us the kind of music they play, or maybe describe the way they feel as they play.

Homebrew rules

•Drinking a potion is a bonus action, administering it to someone else is an action. •Rolling nat 20 in combat allows you to either roll another damage die or just double the damage. •Luck skill: CON mod + CHA mod •Going unconscious/surviving death saves results in a level of exhaustion •You start with max HP

How Rae creates a safe table

We will run session 0 before we jump into the game, going over the consent checklist. The lines and veils will be posted on Discord so we can all refer back to it. Of course, if anyone needs to step away they are welcome to. And if something that wasn't listed as a line or a concern does come up, or if something you weren't aware bothered you does so, please feel free to speak up to let us know if you are uncomfortable by something. My goal is for all of my players to feel comfortable at my table and feel safe.
