About the adventure

An 18+ Monsterhearts 2 game for players of any experience level! Monsterhearts 2 is a D6 system built on the Apocalypse World system. Monsterhearts 2 is designed to tell stories of that ever volatile and exploratory period of youth -- the teens. This game is a slight adjustment from that variance, in exploring young adults in their early college years. An exploration of social life, sexuality, and your inner monster. "Monsterhearts 2 is about the messy lives of teenagers who are secretly monsters. It explores the terror and confusion of having a body that is changing without your permission. The monstrosity of these characters is literal: they are vampires, werewolves, witches, and more. But their monstrosity is also allegorical, standing in for experiences of alienation, shame, queerness, and self-destruction." FRESHMAN FEAR is an original adventure set in the quiet (and fictional) New England town of Echo Bay. Players will portray the students of Echo Bay University (EBU) who live in Montcroix Hall -- the premier residential housing for those students who can, for one reason or another, afford the luxury. Our story begins at THE BUNKER a warehouse party venue rented out by KIΛ and ΔXI for a Homecoming Bash. The unofficially official annual party that opens up the new year. Fresh-Meat always makes the invite list... let's see if you'll survive your first night... [Session 0/Character Creation - Free!] -- STARTING JANUARY --

About me

Looking for immersive games, well-woven stories, and a guide through the manifold worlds of story hidden within your very own mind? Look no further wanderer… Hello All! I’m Josh! I’m a Midwest based DM, MC, GM, and general enjoyer of running TTRPG’s. I run the gamut from cozy combat-lite/combat-free games to lethal horror games. I love running for all levels of player curating games to challenge advanced players and curating experiences for those dipping their toes into a game system for the first time. I have been a gamemaster for 8 years! Much of that time has been spent bouncing between running long-term campaigns for primarily experienced players and running one-shots and limited-term campaigns for beginners. I believe that storytelling has the power to build community and forge a sense of togetherness. Storytelling is an act of collaboration, collectivism, and community-building, which is enriched by uniting through empathy, and curating a space where all stories are welcomed and given voice. Outside GM-ing, I spend much of my time as a playwright and theatre-maker. I use the skills from that aspect of my life to enrich gameplay including, graphics, projections, soundscapes, effects, character materials, and occasional costuming or physical props. Anything that serves to build a better story together! We all have stories to tell, and I cannot wait to hear yours. See you at the table!!

Character creation

Creating your character

Character Skin options will be distributed before Session Zero, but given the collaborative world-building elements of the game, actual character builds will be made in-game. Any of the core skins will be open for play. Come to Session Zero with two or three skin options you might be interested in, that way, as we settle into the game together you have a few options you're ready to hop on.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

This game will be held on Discord. Once you join the Main Server I will pull you into the Channels for this game!

What Josh brings to the table

I tend to use a lot of multimedia (scene backgrounds, title cards, encounter/event trackers, etc.). I also frequently use Soundscapes and Sound Effects to accompany these. For Monsterhearts 2, as it's a modern setting, I will also open up Discord threads to act as 'in-world' group chats and text threads. With this game, I tend to rule situations Rules-flexible, aiming for Rules as Written but adjusting as necessary.

Safety

How Josh creates a safe table

This game system opens itself to more intimate and explicit as well as graphically violent content. With that in mind, this game will use the RPG Consent Checklist as well as in game discussions about Lines & Veils and Fade to Black. Anyone has the ability to Fade to Black in any scene to preserve a veil or line. All of these items will be gone over in Session 0! Additionally, as far as aftercare for sessions, I tend to often leave space to breathe after concluding a session for feedback on the game. Regardless of whether I'm available immediately after, I *always* conclude games with a request for feedback whether immediate or via text communication later (with the latter, I'm always happy to follow up before we start the next session). Before we ever start entering a space for roleplaying, we will have a clear communication of the table's lines and veils before diving in.
