About the adventure

Most of you only know the stories. Whispers traded between field offices. Rumors told over late-night stakeouts. A punchline to some, a warning to others. A division that handled… strange cases. Cases the Bureau couldn’t classify. Cases they couldn’t explain. Cases they didn’t want to acknowledge. And, of course, the two agents who defined it: Special Agent Fox “Spooky” Mulder — brilliant, driven, haunted. Special Agent Dana Scully — skeptical, rational, unbreakable. You know what happened, or at least the official version. The X-Files were opened. Shut down. Reopened. Shut down again. Dragged through conspiracy, tragedy, cover-ups, and the kind of truths that make people disappear. And then, in 2019, the department was finally, officially shuttered. Files sealed. Equipment boxed up. Office lights turned off. Mulder and Scully vanished from the Bureau’s active roster. The rest is buried under enough classification stamps to blot out the sun. Which brings us… to you. You’ve been pulled from field offices across the United States. You were chosen not for your seniority, but for your experiences. Experiences your reports never fully described. Events your supervisors waved off. Things that you saw, or felt, or couldn’t explain. Some of you encountered something before you joined the FBI. Something you’ve never spoken aloud. A figure in the woods. A light in the sky. A voice that wasn’t a voice at all. Some of you crossed paths with the unexplainable during your service. A victim who didn’t stay dead. A suspect who didn’t cast a shadow. A case where the evidence changed when no one was looking. Nothing concrete. Nothing provable. But unmistakable all the same. And that—that—is why you’re here. Assistant Director Miriam Cortez addresses the agents gathered around her: “In 2019 the X-Files were closed. But closing a door doesn’t stop what’s on the other side of it. It only stops us from seeing it.” She slides a single folder across the table. Unmarked. Not logged. Not supposed to exist. Inside is one page. One sentence: THE X-FILES TASK FORCE IS TO BE REACTIVATED, EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY. But this isn’t the old division. There will be no office in the basement. No official designation. No paper trail. Your job is simple on paper, impossible in practice: Investigate the unexplained. Document the impossible. Protect the public without the public ever knowing. And if necessary? Confront the things that slipped through the cracks when the original X-Files fell silent.

About me

Chris Tyner is a GM that has been running tabletop games for more than 35 years and is one of the most sought after storytellers in his hometown. As a long time actor and director, he is known for putting a theatrical flair into his games that offer an immersive storytelling style that keeps his players coming back for more. A huge comic book geek and movie buff, he has always been drawn to the superhero and horror genres, and has been running games like Marvel Superheroes FASERIP, Vampire the Masquerade, Tales from the Loop, GURPS and a host of others over the years for groups around the tri-state area in Southern Indiana. During the COVID outbreak, friends from across the country came to him to scratch the RPG itch, and thus, Dreamslayer Studios was born - an online community of old theatre pals and avid gamers who meet weekly to join together for communal storytelling. Chris looks forward to being able to spin tales with you!

What Dreamslayer brings to the table

I have been a GM for more than 30 years and am a theatrical director and actor. I have written countless horror themed campaigns and specialize in setting moods and creating compelling NPC characters, often with accents and character voices. While my adventures are structured, I also rely on heavy interaction in roleplaying with my players, and include a high level of improvisation in my games. This campaign will rely heavily on role-playing mixed with tense action/horror sequences. I am not a rules monger and lean heavily into the rule of cool as long as we stick to the rolling of the dice.

Homebrew rules

I will be utilizing elements of "Requiem" a series of horror-based add-ons for Everyday Heroes which I wrote and are available on DriveThru RPG and Evil Genius' Sidekick. You do not need to own these to play.
