About me
Hello there traveler! You look as though you've traveled far. I know a wanderer when I see one. Certainly you're in search of something quite important, am I correct? Grand quests? Adventure? A good fight? Friendships? Perhaps all of them together? Well I can assure you that you've found the right place, for I am the Sunset Sage! Why do they call me the Sunset Sage? Well that's because all manner of grand tales happen just after sunset! Of course, you can call me Josh if you prefer to leave all formalities behind us. I've been a Dungeon Master for 12 years with the 5th Edition of Dungeons and Dragons as my preferred game. In that time I've hosted several, multi-year homebrew and pre-written campaigns with several groups. Ever since my first game of DnD I've been hooked on the vast, creative possibilities that it offers. Frankly, as a DM, it's a privilege to be the weaver of the characters' stories and the dynamic world that they reside in. As a professional Dungeon Master I will provide a high quality experience that is on-time, prepared and respectful. You can expect expedient communication from me as well as proper treatment as a valued customer. For your consideration, Roll20, Discord and DNDBeyond are the primary tools I use. Creating your character
For character creation I recommend that players utilize the step-by-step creation process through DnDBeyond as it's the simplest option. Alternatively players are welcome to build a character directly on Roll20 using it's character building tools or by following instructions in the players handbook. We will be starting at 1st level with the Dungeons and Dragons 5e 2024 rules, but players are welcome to take any unique spells or items they like from the original 2014 rules. Please use published 5th Edition books from Wizards of the Coast and avoid any fan-made material. During our FREE session 0 (the setup session) I will be able to help directly with character creation if you need help.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
We will communicate via video/voice chat through Discord for which you'll need to have an account. The Virtual Tabletop (VTT) will be through Roll20 which you'll also need an account for. You can choose to build your character sheet directly on Roll20 or through DnDBeyond. Once you've been added to the Discord server I'll send links for Roll20 and DnDBeyond. If you've claimed a seat at my table then plan to use Discord as the primary point of communication as I will be able to respond more quickly.
What The Sunset Sage (Josh) brings to the table
You can expect this campaign to be laid back with mild themes and a focus on character interactions throughout the story. I will provide voice acting, voice modding, ambient music, maps, lore and character creation advice. Combat will be balanced to the players' abilities with added encounters if the players seek out more battle. You can also expect that I run the game under the Rule of Cool more often than Rules as Written so long as we're not stomping out any of the fun. There will be a FREE session 0 to help set expectations for the whole party. My goal is to make the adventure fun and memorable for everyone!
Homebrew rules
Homebrew is every DM's way of adding their personal flair to the game. Here are some of the homebrew rules I often implement: -If you choose to roll physical dice, then cocked dice or dice that fall off the table should be rerolled. -Imagery for spells can (and should) be reflavored to fit the caster's vision for the spell. -Players can use a d20 "luck roll" to help determine a specific feature of the story.

How The Sunset Sage (Josh) creates a safe table
Before we officially launch the campaign I will host a FREE Session 0. During the Session 0 I will lay out the rules at my table as well as my expectations for how the game will be played. If you have any specific concerns for the content, gameplay or other elements then the session 0 is a good time to bring those up. Additionally I will be utilizing the Deck of Player Safety to mitigate content concerns for everyone in the game. Most importantly, please communicate with me if you have any questions, comments or concerns that you need to share. I am keen to ensure my players are enjoying themselves at the table so don't feel discouraged from messaging me!
