About the adventure

“Zombie Run” is a zombie horror campaign where the party undertakes a road trip across a heavily infested United States. Their goal? Survive long enough to reach somewhere truly safe. Of course, that’s easier said than done, between the elements, limited resources, hordes of the hungry dead, and of course… other humans who might want to take what you have. Expect this game to get dark, as is typical of the genre, but with plenty of moments for humour to shine as well. What’s a road trip without some inside jokes, right?

About me

I have been DMing since D&D 4E, and have experience running games in D&D, 2D20, Gammaworld, Savage Worlds, and Powered By The Apocalypse. While Savage Worlds: Adventure Edition is currently my preferred system, I’m happy to run games in other systems if I think they’ll work better for the campaign’s tone, genre, and intended story. Every system has its strengths and weaknesses, after all! I tend to take a bit of a relaxed approach to planning actual sessions. I know very well how chaotic players can be, so I generally set up a situation and throw the party into it to see how they’ll get out of it. While my games often have a horror element to them, or are full-on horror games, I make a point of ensuring that my players are still enjoying themselves and feel that the game is a safe place for themselves (even if their characters are terrified and in grave danger!)

Character creation

Creating your character

We will build characters together in the first session, but players are encouraged to come up with character ideas and read the “Savage Worlds: Adventure Edition Player’s Guide” before then! We will be using an updated version of the Savage Tales module, “Zombie Run.” All characters will start with 0 advances (the system’s equivalent of level 1), must be human, and must have Edges and Advances that would make sense for a character in a zombie movie set in the modern era. No magic or weird science, sorry; this is a zombie horror game, after all. Dumb Luck, Wound Cap and Unarmored Hero rules will be in play.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

All players must join the Discord server, and must have Foundry accounts.

What Cindy brings to the table

PDFs for both Savage Worlds: Adventure Edition and Zombie Run will be provided to the players. Much of the game will be theatre of the mind, but maps will be brought in as needed for complex environments. We’ll have a selection of ambient sound effects and music playing throughout the session. As this is a pre-existing module, players should be willing to go with the plot. It is structured in such a way that the party is encouraged to get out and explore at their own pace throughout the story, and their choices will impact how things unfold. Because this is a zombie apocalypse, it is very possible for a player character to become infected. They can die, and there will not be a way to bring that character back except as a zombie. Players are encouraged to make a backup character just in case.

Safety

How Cindy creates a safe table

We’ll use Veils and Lines, and players are more than welcome to message the GM to work out any issues that may arise. There will also be check-ins during and after the session, especially when it comes to intense scenes. The campaign will be run with a soft R rating; while the kind of gore and violence typical of zombie horror will be present, explicit sexual content won’t be.
