About the adventure
Gothic horror using the exploding dice and fast and furious Savage Worlds rules. The residents have been suffering for centuries and have all but given up hope that they'll ever live without the constant fear of being taken by 'The Devil'. Children are rare and usually kept close to home so that they don't go missing. Most are sullen and withdrawn—the land wilts without sunlight. Explore the lands of Barovia, seeking allies and information to find a way to escape this living horror.

About me
I've been a gamer since around 1976 and GM'ing since 77 or 78. I've run hundreds of gaming sessions and got into virtual gaming back when it was really hard to connect or play. I like action and adventure, but I also enjoy it when players spend the time to get to know the folks that they encounter. Pathfinder for Savage Worlds is my preferred fantasy ruleset. It's easy to learn and allows a lot of flexibility, while not boring everyone with tons of rules. I like the randomness of exploding dice rolls and cards for initiative, which brings some tension to combat. I'm retired and spend most of my time doing gaming-related stuff, be it printing miniatures or terrain, making maps for virtual games, or helping with gaming conventions (virtual and tabletop). I consider myself a pretty easy going GM, but I don't suffer fools, or folks who are rude to others or myself. I use the 'Golden Rule' I treat others as I like to be treated.

Creating your character
Character races for main characters are your standard ‘Lord of the Rings’ type humanoids: Dwarves, Elves, Half-Elves, Half-orcs, Hobbits, and Humans. Classes: there are no monks in my games, and I have house rules about ‘power characters’ which I will enforce, min/maxing characters will have me correcting them. I have an account with savaged.us, which has an excellent and free (for you) that will allow you to make your character. If you have questions I am happy to help you create a character. Don't sweat it if you've never played SWPF - it's easy to learn the basics, and the other party members will help you.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
you must have a membership (free) at savaged.us (for character creation), and it also has excellent information. Create a character and inform me, and I'll load it into the game-world. I use top-down tokens - if you want a player image, please send it to me in advance of the game. I am also available at various times to help you create your character.
What GM Mark (that old guy GM) brings to the table
I like doing voices, they aren't great, but I enjoy doing them. In-game, I'll be using light levels, sounds, and music to set the mood. Combat with Savage Worlds is usually very fast compared to other games; that being said, it can slow down if players are new. I've been gaming since the 1970's, and I've learned that certain things work and don't work in games. Rules-lawyers (folks who like to deep-dive into the rules and find exceptions and variations to the rules) cause the game to slow down and frustrate the rest of us. If there's a problem with the rules, we'll go over it, figure out a resolve, write it down and move on. Min/max - using the rules to create a 'super fighter' or 'master mage' with no skills in Notice, or anything else will make your character a burden on the group. Humans are adaptive and can have many skills, some better than others. Don't create a min/max. Work with your party. This is a group storytelling game.
Homebrew rules
Notice and Spirit rolls (for fear) can not be re-rolled. Often, I will make Notice rolls in Secret so that you don't know that you've missed something. If players want to 'roll' the dice they can set it to 'Blind roll' and only I will see it. You can only re-roll once for anything. This rule will be covered in Session 0. Bennies for Power Points can only be done once per session, or once per game day. Powers (spells) may be modified in Barovia. Usually, this will be a trapping change (how it looks or acts). Be good to the other players.
