About the adventure

## | Class | Why It Fits Icewind Dale | | Ranger | Natural explorers and trackers—perfect for navigating the tundra. | | Druid | Especially Circle of the Land (Arctic) or Circle of Spores for eerie wilderness themes. | | Cleric | Domains like Light, Tempest, or Grave contrast Auril’s cold darkness. | | Warlock | A patron tied to the Frostmaiden, the Raven Queen, or an Eldritch horror fits the setting’s tone. | | Barbarian | Totem Warrior (Bear) or Ancestral Guardian—resilient and primal, ideal for surviving the wilds. | ## Backgrounds with Thematic Hooks While no new backgrounds are introduced, the following from the Player’s Handbook and Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide work well: - Outlander – Classic survivalist, perfect for locals or exiles. - Folk Hero – A protector of one of the Ten-Towns. - Hermit – Someone who’s seen visions in the snow or survived a Weave-warped blizzard. - Far Traveler – A stranger from the south, drawn to the Dale by prophecy or madness. - Haunted One (Curse of Strahd) – Excellent for horror elements and dark secrets. ## Dark Secrets Mechanic Rime of the Frostmaiden includes a Dark Secrets table, encouraging players to share a hidden past or shared trauma. These secrets: - Tie characters together narratively - Add tension and mystery - Can be used by the DM to create personal horror moments ## Sample Character Concepts - A Goliath Ranger who believes Auril cursed his tribe and seeks redemption through blood and frost. - A Tiefling Warlock whose patron is a slumbering entity beneath the Reghed Glacier. - A Human Cleric of Lathander, bringing light to a land of endless night. Icewind Dale: A Realm of Frozen Secrets and Unyielding Survival Beneath an endless twilight sky, Icewind Dale is locked in a relentless winter, its people struggling against the cold and the unknown horrors lurking beneath the ice. The Ten-Towns, isolated and desperate, cling to survival while whispers of ancient forces stir in the frozen wastes. Here, adventurers do not merely battle monsters—they also fight against the eerie cold itself, every blizzard is a test and every shadow may conceal something far worse. This campaign blends Best Efforts Rules as Written from 2014 and 2024 D&D, incorporating small homebrew mechanics to enhance immersion and tactical depth. Players may voice or narrate their characters, bringing their heroes to life in a world where survival is never guaranteed. The adventure extends to Level 20, weaving together best-selling content to create a rich, evolving narrative. Expect full-color maps, some animated, crafted by Tessa Moorecroft and others, bringing the frozen expanse to life with stunning detail. Whether navigating treacherous ice flows, uncovering buried secrets, or confronting the Frostmaiden’s chilling grip, every session is a step deeper into a world where only the bold endure. Will you carve your legend into the icy mountains of Icewind Dale—or be lost to the stormy cold?

Homebrew rules

Scrolls: Using a spell scroll is an Arcana check: use 10 + spell level − your max spell level if it’s on your list, otherwise use 10 + 2×spell level − your caster level. The action required to use a spell scroll is the action required to cast the spell or 1 action, whichever is less. Potions of Healing: • Bonus Action (in combat): Roll the potion’s healing dice. • Action or Out of Combat: Take the potion’s maximum healing value. Cleaving: If a melee attack drops a creature to 0 HP and you dealt excess damage, you may apply the leftover damage to another target in reach that the original attack roll would have hit. Flanking: You gain +2 to melee attack rolls if: • An ally is directly opposite you on the target, or • You have three or more allies adjacent to the same enemy.

Safety

How GM AP creates a safe table

Every session can be a session 0. I use a session opener that encourages players to use/update their safety tool preferences on an ongoing basis. Also included is the ability of players to create private and/or public threads where they need only state their safety tool concerns and I will avoid it and do my best to steer the players away from said concern and handle any desired discussion of the topic to the best of my ability and seek feedback from the concerned where and when necessary before doing so.
