About the adventure

OPEN-WORLD SANDBOX SCI-HORROR CAMPAIGN | $5 OFF FIRST SESSION | BEGINNERS WELCOME ========================================================= Who you are isn't important. Good-for-nothing criminal, blue-collar teamster, freelance merc for hire, or just some poor sap thrown down in the Choke for getting behind on your O2 debt—what matters is you're meat, and believe me, the grinder loves meat. Your job is simple—until it isn't. Descend into the depths of mob-run space station, Prospero's Dream. Take the freight elevator to the Choke, the half-oxygenated, open-"air" debtor's prison where 3 million of the station's most desperate are willing to try anything on anyone if the payoff might score them an hour of O2. Investigate the rumors of a "Dr. Bancali" and her link to the Acute Cybernetic Mutagenetic Disorder, along with the disappearance of the more-informed, better-equipped investigator sent down before you. Oh, and try not to get mauled—or worse, infected—by the mutated man-machine monstrosities crawling out of the depths of Choke more often with every passing day. ========================================================= ☠️ Experience Mothership, the viral hit, easy-to-learn, easy-to-play sci-horror TTRPG system and the official module "A Pound of Flesh" ☠️ Play in an open-world sandbox, where your party can go in any direction. Make friends, change sides, adopt NPCs. Hire help, kill your boss, become someone else's boss. Sell your services to the highest bidder, try to save the day, or attempt to solve the mystery—and maybe, if you're lucky, live to tell the tale. ☠️ Encounter a wide variety of NPCs, factions, locations, and monsters from or inspired by the "A Pound of Flesh" module, expanded by a GM who's run it dozens of times. ☠️ Build your own background. Knuckdragging mob enforcer? Blue-collar teamster on a shit assignment? Off-station merc looking to get out and go home? Prisoner with no other options? No matter what, I'll work to integrate your backstory into the places, the world, the people, the stories! ☠️ Rich descriptions and deeply realized characters—with unique, stylized character voices—and the vividness of the horror scaled to the comfort level of the table. ☠️ New to Mothership? Learn from a GM who is also a professional educator! 📽️ Touchstones: Alien, Total Recall, Akira, Tetsuo: The Iron Man As a GM of 15 years, an award-winning TTRPG designer, and a published sci-fi author, I'm more than ready to guide you through a vivid, open world of science-fiction horror...but don't just take my word for it. Check out reviews from past players, including award-winning game designers like Caleb Zane Huett (Triangle Agency), Briar Sovereign (Armour Astir), Heather Flowers (Extreme Meatpunks Forever) and more!

About me

Hi! I'm Jess, and I'm: ⭐ An award-winning TTRPG designer ⭐ An experienced actual play podcaster ⭐ A published sci-fi author ⭐ A GM of over 15 years ⭐ A professional educator I especially love: 🎲 Running open-world, open-ended sandbox games driven by player agency and dynamic, interconnected factions, NPC relationships, objectives to make the world feel alive. 🎲 Sci-fi systems like Mothership and Shadowrun—I even have a circuitboard tattoo on my scalp. I also run my own games, like the Starship Troopers and Helldivers-inspired 'narrative wargame' PLANET FIST! When I GM: 🎲 I'm careful to make sure every player gets their turn in the spotlight. 🎲 I always weave player-created backstories into the existing world. 🎲 As a designer of multiple GMless games, I'm skilled at bringing the best contributions out of other players at the table, enabling them to contribute and help shape the overall world. 🎲 My players praise my knack for drawing connections between characters and stories, in ways that make the world feel rich and inhabited. You can hear me GM on AP podcasts like Role Playing Public Radio, and facilitate my award-winning GMless games Going Rogue and I Have the High Ground on podcasts like A More Civilized Age, One Shot, Party of One, and more.

Character creation

Creating your character

Mothership character creation is intentionally very fast—it's intended that if a player's character dies at the table, they roll up a new one and rejoin the action. As such, and in order to create compelling narrative connections between crewmembers, we will create characters together at the table. I'll be there to guide with any rules questions, and even with new players, character creation is unlikely to take any more than 30 minutes of session 1—we'll start playing immediately after! Players roll a character using the standard instructions from the official Mothership Player Survival Guide with the following exceptions: ✅ They may assign their randomly rolled stats to attributes of their choice ✅ They may roll twice on tables and take their preferred results ✅ Players who want to include third-party Mothership content in their character at creation can message me beforehand and we can discuss if it fits!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

✅ Players will need to join either a Discord server or Discord group chat (if they would prefer not to join a new server) ✅ The game will be hosted via a Discord audio call ✅ Players will be polled on both their comfort and desire with inclusion of video—if everyone is comfortable and anyone desires it, we'll play with video on ✅ If some players are uncomfortable with video, but anyone would like me as GM to have my video on, I am also opening to being the only one on video! ✅ Google Sheets will be used for character sheets ✅ I may show maps through Discord's chat or whiteboard features, or a simple free VTT like Owlbear Rodeo—happy to use whatever platform is easiest for a given table!

Homebrew rules

For those familiar with the A Pound of Flesh module, I make a small number of changes to the story of the A Pound of Flesh module for safety reasons: ⚠️ Rather than being an addictive recreational drug in addition to a medical anesthetic, the Sycorax drug is only used for medical anesthesia (but the station's monopoly on its trade is still extremely lucrative) ⚠️ [MINOR, VAGUE SPOILERS] Dr. Bancali is not trying to cure a sick daughter. Instead, she is trying to cure her sick wife Additionally, my Mothership tables use a small set of well-tested house rules, many of which come from the list of suggested potential house rules in the official Mothership Warden Operation's Manual (i.e. the GM's guide.) These include: 🎲 MODIFIED ARMOR DEGRADATION: Upon taking damage in excess of your armor’s AP, halve its AP, rounding down. At 0HP, it’s destroyed. 🎲 MODIFIED IMPENETRABLE WOUNDS: You cannot take 2 Wounds in one instance of damage; if you would do so, you remain at 1 HP. 🎲 MODIFIED ONE TIME ADVANCEMENT: After a character survives their first job, they may add 10 to any 1 Stat or Save when they make a Rest Save. 🎲 SIMULTANEOUS REST & INFECTION SAVES: Infection Saves (from the A Pound of Flesh module) may be made simultaneously to Rest Saves, rather than instead of. 🎲 ANDROID CHARGING: Androids must charge 1hr for every 5h of activity (i.e. 4h a night) or face [-] on all rolls (same as a human breathing the low-oxygen air in the Choke region of the A Pound of Flesh module.) A 500cr Battery [High Power] (Player Survival Guide pg. 10) can hold enough charge for 5hr of activity, given 1hr to charge it / charge with it.

Safety

How Jess creates a safe table

Given that Mothership is a horror game, the proper use of safety tools & safety discussions is particularly important. To that end: ✅ At the beginning of session 1, we will have a discussion of 'how hard we want to go at' various common horror elements, and I will adjust my GMing and descriptions appropriately ✅ Topics that are triggering for any player (even those that appear in the official module) will be removed, and descriptions of elements like violence, gore, and more will always be adjusted to the comfort level of the player who is least comfortable with those depictions ✅ A Lines and Veils document will be sent out beforehand for players to add lines and veils, then reviewed at the beginning of each session ✅ Players may send X (stop), N (change direction), or Os in chat or by indicating them verbally—as I always tell my players, I used the X-card live on a stream demonstrating one of my own games, so believe me, it's totally okay to use the X-card! ✅ There is an Open Door policy, and players are welcome to leave or pause play at any time
