About the adventure
In the city of Baldur's Gate, something foul lurks beneath the surface. What seems like a trivial political scheme goes far deeper, to the first level of hell itself - and it will take a madcap journey through the bowels of Avernus to change the doom that is coming for your world. Will your character be the same as the long hours in this accursed place take their toll, or will you transform into something far more frightening? ⚔️ Expect a roleplay-heavy campaign with an emphasis on negotiation and working with your party to creatively overcome or escape from challenges - there are often more ways to solve a situation than just your swords! 🏳️🌈 This is a campaign best suited for moderately experienced players that sees players rise from Level 1 to Level 13. This is an inclusive and LGTBQ+ friendly table. Expect Rule of Cool, a focus on player stories and interactions, and Natural 20 Critical Successes as well as Natural 1 Critical Failures. We are using the Dungeons and Dragons 5.5 edition rules, but players are welcome to either use the 5E or 5.5E rules when building their characters. 🔥 Descent Into Avernus features a heavy emphasis on devils, demons, morbid afterlife fates, hooks, chains, soul-powered motorcars and tortured spirits. We'll discuss any potential trigger topics during our one-on-one Session 0 prior to the game, but it's good to be aware of these topics up front.

About me
Hello! I'm William, a queer horror author and creator of the fiction podcast Hello From The Hallowoods. I've been an avid RPG player and DM for over ten years, and I love the feeling that comes with sitting down with a group of friends to tell a story together. My games are inclusive, beginner-friendly, and focused on creating a fun and engaging story for each member of the party rather than following the nitty-gritty of the rules. Whether this is your first time playing an RPG and you don't know where to begin, or you've been playing games for decades, you're welcome at the table. I'm excited to meet new players, tell new stories, and engage with the internet audience in a new way. Let's play!

Creating your character
This campaign is best suited for players with a moderate level of experience. We'll have an initial one-on-one call on Discord called a 'Session 0', where we'll either build your character step by step, or review an existing character that you've built and finalize how you'll fit into the story. Characters start at Level 1. Stats may be Standard, Point Buy, or Rolled. All official classes, species, and items are acceptable, but please consult before using homebrew or third-party material. Both 5E or 5.5E character builds are acceptable! A fillable PDF character sheet will be available, but players are welcome to use other tools like the D&DBeyond character creation engine. Characters who join the campaign midway through will begin at the party's current level. Milestone-based leveling.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
- Make sure you have a working microphone and webcam! - Create a Discord account if you do not already have one. - Feel free to build your Level 1 character ahead of our Session 0 call.
What William brings to the table
I'll bring a virtual tabletop for us to use called Owlbear Rodeo, vivid storytelling, and rich character voices. You can expect a game that's Rule of Cool, centered around your character, your interactions with the world and the party, and ultimately on telling an engaging story for everyone at the table.

How William creates a safe table
Each player's experience begins with a Session 0, where we'll either review the character you've come up with or build it together on the call. We'll discuss any potential triggers that player may have, and they'll be added to a list of topics to handle sensitively or avoid altogether for this campaign. During play, should triggering content arise, players have the ability to pause the game at any time and raise how to proceed. Some bullets from the Luxton Technique I enjoy include - * When, in play, a player encounters triggering material, they can, if they choose, talk about that to the other players. When they do this, the other players listen. * As part of talking about it — and possibly the only thing that they need say — the player is given absolute fiat power over that material, expressed as a want or a need. For instance “I need this to have a happy ending” or “I want this character to not be hurt right now” or “I need this character to not get away with this”. * We play towards accommodating that player’s requests. After the game, we'll have a debrief to discuss any issues that arose during the session and anything that we'd like to see going forward.
