About the adventure

Vampire: The Dark Ages is a game of personal horror, where undead vampires, the descendants of Caine, rule the night, and various lineages, known as clans, vie for power and the control of mortals from the shadows as they struggle to contain the Beast within. In the 13th century Prince-Bishopric of Utrecht, the Lasombra Prince of Utrecht has problems. To the west, a young Toreador upstart has caught the attention of the Count of Holland, and is making moves on limiting the Prince’s power. To the north, a Brujah elder with a grudge against the Church is stirring up a peasant revolt. Closer to home, the local Ventrue are plotting against him, using the local merchant guilds to weaken his grasp on power. As if that weren’t enough, local bishop of Utrecht is particularly strong-willed, and becoming increasingly resistant to his vampiric influence. The local fae are none too happy either, with the spread of Christianity forcing them further and further into the dark corners of the countryside, and they have a bone to pick with the missionary-turned-Cainite prince. And the prince has so many lovely bones to choose from... Calling in favors owed to him by other elders, Prince Saeweard has assembled a group of neonates to throw at his problems in the hopes that his problems will go away. He’s willing to reward these neonates with their own domain within his vast territory, and/or titles and status within Cainite society. Will you help Saeweard’s crown rest easier on his head, or will you throw your lot in with one of the Prince’s many enemies and try to topple him from his throne? This game will involve a lot of intrigue, a lot of history, some mystery, and possibly some combat.

About me

Hi! I'm a writer and published journalist who's been GMing for over 30 years. I first began roleplaying and running games in high school, but my experience really took off in college in the 1990s, when I was introduced to the World of Darkness game setting. I've run one-shot games at conventions and I served as gaming room director for Jersey Devil Con 3 in 2003.

Character creation

Creating your character

Characters can be created ahead of time, either by meeting with me on Discord or during Session 0, using the Vampire: 20th Anniversary Dark Ages rules. Players may also use a pre-generated character, either provided by me or selected from one of the Libellus Sanguinis books (PDFs available on DriveThruRPGs). I can provide character sheets.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players will need to join my Discord server.

What Jamie brings to the table

This game will be political intrigue-heavy, and will incorporate real-world historical events in the game. I try to streamline combat to keep it from slowing down the game, and we'll embrace the Rule of Cool - if it sounds like something you can do, try it!

Homebrew rules

This game uses rules from the Vampire: 20th Anniversary Dark Ages edition, which is compatible with the 20th Anniversary edition rules. I homebrew languages as a Knowledge not a Merit, using earlier iterations of the rules.

Safety

How Jamie creates a safe table

Safety is a priority in my games. Especially in Vampire games. We'll talk about Lines and Veils during Session 0. Players are encouraged to message me or hold up X, N, or O cards to signal the need for changes or pauses in the story. I'm always available before or after to discuss issues that arise.
