About the adventure

A player-centered campaign, where you, the Monster Hunters, decide where the mysteries occur, how you work together (a secret government agency, websleuths...), while I, the Keeper, create the Mysteries you must solve, leading to threats & Monsters to overcome & destroy! This is a campaign, hosted on Discord (with info' on Roll20), made of short adventures, all linked together by a story arc. Like episodes in one season of a series. All players are welcome, total beginners to RPGs too. Experience is less important than wanting to have fun & create cool stories. This is a Play by Post game, with daily posting on a Discord server, asynchronous, meaning you read when you have time, and type your answer later if you wish... no need for direct back & forth. Billing is weekly, for the seven days of gaming (168 hours!)...

About me

American-born living in France since childhood (bilingual). Started gaming with the old basic DnD. Played & GMed a lot of games (Vampire, WFRP, Pathfinder & Starfinder...) and more recently The One Ring, Alien RPG & The Walking Dead (Free League). Interested in player-facing games I have moved to PbtA (namely MotW). IRL feature-film, video-game & series screenwriter.

Character creation

Creating your character

You will create your own characters. It is a very simple & rapid process. Each type of Monster Hunter (the Chosen, the Expert, the Wronged...) has a "playbook" that lists the choices you make to determine their stats, moves, gear... Fast. Then, you're good to go & start looking for the clues that will lead you to face your foes, and save your home, the town... the world! The rules are very simple to learn, as you go.

The current party

Only 1 hunter of each type is allowed at the same time in game. You may choose among 12 of the Playbooks from the Core Rules (The Monstrous & The Spooktacular not being allowed).

What to expect

Preparing for the session

To sign up & play, all you need is your enthusiasm... and the ability to join the game's Discord server, where all the info' will be, and where you & I will post our dialog & actions, and roll the dice, daily. You may also opt to use Roll20 (or GoogleDocs) for your character sheets, reading the rule book... But the game is made for you to do without that. You will decide what kind of Hunter you wish to portray, and receive all necessary tools to play them (the few pages of your "playbook"). The fee is a weekly sum, that covers seven days of gaming (168 hours!), with daily posts & activity, that you can read & answer at whatever time suits you best (this is asynchronous, not instant messaging).

What Eric C. brings to the table

Monster of the Week is a player-centered game: you roll the dice, I, the Keeper, do not. I react to your actions. Though I do set the stage, and get you investigating a Mystery, for which I know the actors, and the direction it is supposed to take. "Supposed" to... for you will surely derail the Monster's plan! There are people to question, clues to gather, a mystery to unravel, at least one big final confrontation to win... and an overarching story to figure out. This is Play by Post, so you get my best writing, but no voices (which are not my strong point, so you are not missing out on anything!). I strive to use what you offer, set things up that will pay off several sessions down the line, and make every post lively, fun, & interesting. It's a game. For you & I to enjoy!

Homebrew rules

I am only using the Monster of the Week (MotW) core rulebook (the 2023 Hardcover Edition of the 2015 Revised Edition), none of the other books. This is a game for beginners too, so I am focusing on the core rules. Which are enough to have a good deal of fun!

Safety

How Eric C. creates a safe table

This is a game of horror, and monsters that aim to destroy people's bodies, minds, and souls... on as large a scale as they can. This includes kids, animals... So, that is what you are stepping into. However, it is not a game of gratuitous violence, and will regularly fade to black. Nor is it one that allows any kind of sexual aggression; bigotry, sexism, racism, or other discrimination... We will see what specific lines you do not want crossed. And, given that you read & answer at your leisure, breaks are automatic.
