About the adventure

The Emperor has summoned the player characters to Otosan Uchi, the Imperial Capital, on a matter of utmost delicacy. Two high-profile deaths have occurred within the city's highest circles—a celebrated general and a renowned magistrate, both paragons of bushido. While officially declared natural deaths, disturbing details have emerged, and whispered rumors in the court suggest the work of an oni. The Emperor cannot afford panic in his own capital, nor can he ignore the possibility of a supernatural threat or, worse, a calculated conspiracy against his most loyal servants. The characters must investigate discreetly to determine the truth. Operating within the Imperial Capital presents unique challenges. Every action is observed, every question carries political weight, and the victims' families and allies are among the most powerful figures in Rokugan. The characters must navigate the intricate web of the Imperial Court while conducting their investigation, dealing with rival clans jockeying for position, courtiers who may be concealing crucial information to protect their interests, and the possibility that someone is deliberately staging these deaths to appear supernatural. The stakes could not be higher—if an oni truly stalks Otosan Uchi, the spiritual heart of Rokugan is compromised. If the killer is human, then someone is bold and skilled enough to murder the Emperor's chosen within sight of the throne itself. Either answer threatens the stability of the Empire.

About me

I have worked in private game design as Sortilege since 2018. Typically I run games in-person at venues around the Twin Cities. I love teaching new systems and settings to new players: those who have never played an RPG before, or who maybe have only played Dungeons & Dragons before.

Character creation

Creating your character

I will provide access to all relevant sourcebooks, and we will discuss character ideas together before locking them in. You will not be ronin, or emerald magistrates; you should be old enough to have been recognized for your quality. I am happy to assist with character creation.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need a webcam and a microphone, and I recommend using a PC or laptop so that you can best utilize the character sheets and maps/handouts. However, I have used a tablet successfully; a phone will not be sufficient.

What Jordan Peacock brings to the table

My style as gamemaster is very character-driven and responsive: I do not have a set outcome for the campaign, and I prepare situations for your characters to respond to. I also rarely present situations with clear good/bad outcomes: in many cases what is important is what trade-offs your character is willing to risk or accept. I generally do not utilize dynamic maps or audio, nor do I do special character voices. Combat, when it happens, occurs as part of the narrative and is generally theatre of the mind.

Safety

How Jordan Peacock creates a safe table

In our free session zero we will zero in on what elements we specifically want to include, what we want to exclude, and what we want to tread lightly around. Players and the GM have a right to change their mind, so our lines & veils is a living document that will be adjusted as necessary throughout the campaign. During sessions players will be encouraged to signal green (encouraging), yellow (warning) and red (stop) to indicate ongoing consent or to raise flags if there is an unexpected issue that requires discussion or adjustment.
