About the adventure

Ryuutama is an easy system to learn since it is built to lightly guide roleplay. The game implies an emphasis on travel, whimsy, and nature. Players will spend much more time setting up camp, focusing on place, culture, and nature than in other games. It carries a wonderful whimsical atmosphere where moments are allowed to be simply blissful. Dragons and spirits are abundant. There is an emphasis on weather, environment, animals, This campaign is new player friendly. We will start at level 1. I have designed the starting city and a broad main plot hook, but the players have multiple roads they can take and can engage in collaboratively filling future towns and cities with magic. You don't need to buy the base book to play this game, and there will be heavy home brew rules. A very normal session might be the players waking up at their last stop, making breakfast, travelling through a rainy highland, finding a strange animal, helping it escape an angry spirit, and setting up camp for the night.

About me

Howdy! I'm @Brcien or Bricen. I started rpgs by making my own system without knowing about dnd in middle school. I have been playing dnd for about 8 years with time split about even between DMing and playing. My preferred game is rules medium to ground the story but not eat all the time. I'm hype for Daggerheart and interested in Ryuutama. I think smaller games gaining traction is healthy for tabletop gaming since it pressures DnD to up its product quality. My perfect game is an ongoing game with a fantasy world themed after a historical time period with players devoted to the characters and their arcs. I love pulling in back stories and developing complex relationships over time. I like whimsical and happy moments and inner character conflict. I also love faith themes and family dynamics. I love places and think a lot about what makes a tavern special or a city different. I like thinking about the food and drinks and the weird characters that can inhabit the special places.

Character creation

Creating your character

At the campaign start, we will sit down and talk about characters we're interested in (remember home brew will be abundant play what you want despite what is in the book), how they fit in the world, what their dreams are, if/how they know the other characters, their family and friends, and I will walk you through making a digital character sheet. We are starting in a desert city with factories, smithys, casinos, and an oasis, but Ryuutama is a game about travel so you will see many lands. That can inform your character if you don't have a strong idea. You can be from somewhere else; we can talk about that in session 0.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Generally though, you should look up the classes beforehand and have 2 options you're interested in, or a class you'd like a homebrew for. Make an account on Roll20, a free virtual tabletop used for ttrpgs. Please make your screen name on Roll20 your chosen name to be called as a player, not the character name. You should create accounts on Google Drive, for sharing files, and Discord, for voice chatting. You should join the Discord and the Google Drive and read through a little about the world on the Google Drive. You should message in the discord an introduction to yourself as a player, say when you can start playing, how much experience you have with ttrpgs, and any character details you are excited about.

What Bricen brings to the table

I have ran ttrpgs for most of my life. I love crafting games to the specific tastes of the party. In this game specifically, I am highly available for questions and clarifications throughout the week. Ryuutama is combat light and has light rules for combat, but I will be buying maps from small creators to use. I make pretty big information bases on the Google Drive. I am moderately flexible on attendance and payment after the first couple sessions.

Homebrew rules

Ryuutama does not have races, but if you would like to be a weird race, we can homebrew that replacing minor class features. Homebrew classes are open and relatively inobtrusive. Weapons and special items we will name, and they grow with magic over time. Items found in the world can also have names and history. There will be a loose magic crafting system. There will be a loose system for cooking different recipes to get bonuses for the day. Using consumable items in combat is a bonus action. The players can change any rule they want if they unanimously agree, but enemies follow the same rules as the players.

Safety

How Bricen creates a safe table

We will check for triggers in session 0. There are a couple of things I will never put in the game, but the game will have blood, horror, villains doing bad things, and other things that you should let me know . Mid session, players can request a 5-10 minute break and can message or call me to explain nuances they'd prefer avoiding.
