About the adventure

This winter, mysterious posters began appearing in towns and villages across the realm. Their message is simple yet enticing: "Adventurers needed! Marquise Meshak de Tza seeks brave souls to explore the West March. Those who answer this call shall be rewarded with gold, land, noble titles, or other boons, as agreed with the Marquise’s officials. Interested parties must present themselves in Rivburg before the 7th of March." The West March is a land of danger and discovery — an untamed frontier where ancient mysteries slumber and monstrous threats prowl. It matters not who you are, where you hail from, or what past sins weigh upon you. Here, only one thing matters: the courage to venture forth, slay beasts, uncover forgotten relics, and claim the treasures of a forsaken world. This is a dark fantasy exploration campaign, run in the style of West Marches. Nearly every session is a one-shot: you begin in the New World settlement, journey into the wilds, and return by the end. Expect perilous travel, treacherous dungeons, fierce monsters, strange happenings in camp, and more. I’m seeking players who love roleplay, exploration, tactical combat and are not scared of the eerie. Whether you want to drop in for one game or be present every time a group ventures into the wild an put together pieces of an ancient mystery, you're welcome to join! Will you brave the West March?

About me

Hi! I'm Ben and I love stories. I've been playing D&D for 4 years now and it's one of my greatest joys along with exploring nature, listening to and playing music, spending time with friends, watching movies or building my own lego models, which I have often used for D&D terrain. I've GM'ed two +1 years campaigns, around 5 shorter campaigns and countless one shots, including a game for a high school class I've been invited to run. Most games I GM are high fantasy, though I flirted with western, sci-fi, horror and low-magic settings. I think the most important thing in a TTRPG is the story the players and the GM create together. Their victories, their failures, their epic moments and moments of sharing around the campfire. Just like in real life, it's all about the relationships and the common experience.

Character creation

Creating your character

Since this is a drop-in drop-out campaign, we will not be having a session 0. However, we can consult your character creation process (backstory and mechanics) via messages or a call. Themes and backstory - I'd appreciate if you had a motivation to explore the West March, that makes collaboration with the rest of the party much easier. - You don't have to worry about an elaborate backstory. If you write something (which is cool, it gives context to your character and inspires me too), there is a chance that I might use it if it fits the game and its themes. - the setting is a young world that is mostly uncivilized, imagine early years in the Witcher universe for example. I'd appreciate if you didn't create sci-fi character. (if you want to use some basic firearms, we can consult it). If you have wilder ideas about your backstory (being from another dimension etc.), please let me know, we'll make it work. Rules and mechanics - We will be using D&D 2024 rules, however if there is something in the 2014 rules that is not in the 2024 version, you can absolutely use it! - you will start at level 5. - for stats, you can use either the standard array or the 5d6 version. (Roll 5d6 and add up the three highest die results. Repeat this process for each die. If you roll two stats below 10, your character is incapable of adventuring and you roll all your stats again). - you can start with an uncommon magical item, but let me know what you're choosing. - for sources, you can use these: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024 http://dnd2024.wikidot.com/ If you have any questions, please let me know, communication is key!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

- create your character (wow, I know, crazy) - we will be playing on a discord server, so an account on the app is needed. - a microphone and a good internet connection is required. - I'd love if you used a camera, since it allows for easier role play and communication. D&D is a social game and playing with an icon on the screen is not ideal. Reading your expressions also helps me with leading the game. However, if you don't have a camera or are very uncomfortable with showing your face (even though I think all humans are beautiful), you can play without a camera. - since this is a drop-in drop-out game where you will be delving deeper and deeper into a wilderness, uncovering its secrets, we will be keeping a diary of past games. If you enjoy doing this, that's aweome! If no one will, I'll take the responsibility. Before every session, it'd be nice if you checked the diary and learned about new events and discoveries.

What Ben the DM brings to the table

What will I bring? Hehehe...EVERYTHING! And now, in all seriousness: - my acting skills. I love voicing NPCs. - epic lore and locations. - rule of cool. - lots of space for improv and creative problem solving. - theatre of the mind combat. We might use online maps on Owlbear Rodeo for more complex encounters. I will share a screen and links, you don't need to create an account. - music to enhance the immersion. - a world map on canva (no account needed) where new locations will be added every session. - care for players. If you have a direction you wanna go with your character, I'll try to make it work. - camp encounters at the beginning or end of the session (e.g. merhcant coming to the camp offering goods).

Homebrew rules

Potions - bonus action: roll the dice for healing - action: heal full hp. Rule of cool - if you got a cool idea, I'll try to make it work!

How Ben the DM creates a safe table

When you join, I'll have a quick chat with you to know if there are any triggers for you. Then I'll ask about your feelings and state after session. We're playing in a darker fantasy world, but I wanna ensure that you have a good time! If there's ever an issue, please talk to me!
