About the adventure

The little town of Redtower may seem peaceful and quiet, but it sits only a few hours away from the dangerous and deadly Scarlet Citadel. Long ago, this crumbling fortress served as a home base for powerful mages and other forces. Now, a deadly dungeons sits underground, claiming the lives of all who try to ply its secrets. This game is a modern take on the classic dungeon crawl, with plenty of opportunities for roleplay. Fight, think, and negotiate your way through each layer as you strive to answer the question that drives you: What lies beneath the Scarlet Citadel?

About me

I've loved fantasy fiction since my stepdad first handed me a copy of A Spell for Chameleon by Piers Anthony. I started writing in the genre right away, and to this day I am a writer first and everything else second. I didn't start playing TTRPGs until college, when a friend introduced me to Pathfinder. From the very first session, I knew that the role of Game Master was the right one for me, and I started GMing soon after. I've been GMing D&D 5e and Pathfinder 2e for nine years, using both homebrew and pre-written modules. I consider myself an "over-prepared GM," but if there's one thing I've learned, it's that nothing goes according to plan! Some call a high-fantasy medieval setting boring and stale. I call it classic and nostalgic, but that doesn't mean I'm married to it. I love all fantasy and even scifi, regardless of setting or sub-genre. While my experience with D&D 5e and Pathfinder 2e makes me an ideal GM for those games, I love exploring new TTRPGs with interesting mechanics and themes. I look forward to playing with you!

Character creation

Creating your character

We will create characters together on Roll20 during Session Zero. You are welcome to have a vague character concept and class picked out ahead of time, but please do not come to Session Zero with a fully fleshed-out character and filled character sheet. We will be rolling stats using 4d6+1 drop lowest. We will start at level 1. We will be using options from any 5e or third party sourcebook, including options from Kobold Press. No evil alignments. No abilities or spells that allow you to fly. You may play a race that can fly, but must come up with a reason why your character cannot fly (such as a permanent injury, or they never learned how).

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need at least a mic; webcam preferred. We will use Discord to keep organized and to chat out-of-game as well as for in-game voice chat. Please make a Roll20 account before your first session.

What Nikki brings to the table

We will be playing on Roll20 with virtual maps, soundscapes, and music. I do a mix of mostly character voices and a little summarizing.

Homebrew rules

Drinking a potion is a bonus action; administering a potion to someone else is an action. We will replace Inspiration with Tales of the Valiant's "Luck Points" system.

Safety

How Nikki creates a safe table

Players will fill out a Lines and Veils document before the game starts. In addition, we will use the "Pause for a Second" safety tool to discuss any unforeseen issues that pop up in-game. Simply say "Pause for a second," and we will address the issue at hand and discuss how to move forward (or backward, if need be). Safety tools and other game expectations will be discussed in detail at Session Zero.
