About the adventure

Beneath the City of Splendors, the yawning chasm of Undermountain waits. This is no ordinary dungeon—it's a sprawling, sentient labyrinth ruled by Halaster Blackcloak, a genius wizard driven mad by centuries of obsession and power. His twisted magic has warped the halls into ever-changing layers of danger, mystery, and dark whimsy. Monsters stalk its corridors, forgotten secrets lie buried in dust, and the laws of reality bend to the Mad Mage’s will. This is a full send of the classic Undermountain mega-dungeon, reimagined for 5th Edition—but with a decidedly old-school soul. We'll be leaning into traditional character races and classes, limiting fringe options, and introducing a handful of subtle (but creepy) rule tweaks to turn the screws just a little tighter. Exploration, caution, resource management, and clever problem-solving are key. This campaign is long, challenging, and often unforgiving. Ideal players will embrace the crawl, not rush the destination. Darkness is coming. Bring a torch.

About me

Greetings Travelers, I have been playing and running games since near the beginning of the hobby in the late 70's when I was a wee lad in middle school. Not mired in the past; I appreciate what the modern games have with regard to mechanics, but bring to the table some of the difficulty and grittiness in the earlier styles of play. If you thought WoW Classic was a great idea, I'm your guy. I have a degree in Medieval Studies and continue to do festivals and reenactment work; where I joyfully work as an entertainer playing the captain of a company of mercenaries. While I don't intend games to be a simulation, I do like them to feel a bit grounded. Even a published adventure will have my own spin to it. I would run 5e D&D, with some light house rules to give it a slightly earlier edition feel - nothing that would make the game seem unfamiliar, and also enjoy running Call of Cthulhu, or its more government conspiracy variant, Delta Green. I am working on a possible homebrew campaign, and the published adventures I will run will likely be less known third party titles. I look forward to playing with you!

Character creation

Creating your character

I am fine with creating characters over discord, and getting on as small groups or individually to create characters before the game starts. I like to hit the ground running!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need Discord and an account on Roll20.

What GM_Devon brings to the table

I have a shamefully large amount of tokens and assets as well as beautiful custom maps for this campaign.

Homebrew rules

Some mild homebrew rules will be in play. Mostly to make the dungeon seem darker, so fewer characters will have Darkvision. This allows the lighting effects in Roll20 to really shine and increase the creep factor. Will also be using different death save mechanics to add a little more edge to the game. I am also considering henchmen / hireling / retainer play from old school games.

Breaks as needed. I like to keep my games "clean" without much / any sexual content.
