About the adventure
“We exist without ever knowing / If this world / Is a dream or reality / Reality or a dream.” — “No. 942,” Kosgin Wakashū, Volume 18, Misc. Poems July 1986. Ikaruga, Japan. While driving his car home from the market, the elderly and inattentive Taneguchi Fumio made a grave mistake. In a moment of confusion, he mistook the gas pedal on his car for the brake. These things happen all the time and pass by unnoticed, but fate has frowned upon him today. At the moment of his error, the elementary school student Nakamura Hinako was crossing the street on her way home from school. Bang Crash. Metal connects with flesh. The girl is killed instantly. Taneguchi forfeited his car and his license. He prayed for the soul of the young life he ended. Regional news outlets picked up the story — if it bleeds, it leads — and argued over what should be done about the epidemic of elderly drivers. Politicians all promised change, but nothing ever came of it. Nakamura’s fate was a tragedy, to be sure, but the kind of tragedy that fizzles out within months. So why, more than a year later, do the people of Ikaruga feel as if the fog still hangs heavy upon them? Sleep paralysis, lethargy, and depression choke the life out of this town, and in their dreams, they all see an unsettling monster. Most of all, what does this have to do with the man in the mask? 👹 Encounter the King in Yellow in 1980s Japan! 🔧 Premium Foundry module published by Chaosium 🗺️ High-resolution art, battlemaps, tokens, and animations 🎭 Professional theatrical storytelling and a dedication to detail 🎶 Immersive audio, from haunting wails to club beats 🖥️ All official game resources and technology to conquer the king ⚔️ Beginner-friendly while still challenging more experienced investigators 🏳️🌈 Inclusive environment for all identities, in and out of game 🛎️ Weekly office hours for questions, concerns, and casual banter The Sutra of Pale Leaves is a retro-inspired cosmic horror campaign for the seventh edition of Call of Cthulhu. Players will take on the role of young adults swept up in a world of excess, conspicuous consumption, and enormous technological changes, facing off against the King in Yellow like you’ve never seen him before. Inspired by the works of Robert W. Chambers, H.P. Lovecraft, and Junji Ito, the world needs the Prince of Pale Leaves — and he always answers the call!

How MJ creates a safe table
The content warnings detailed below list items that are likely to appear in the game. This is not a complete list of sensitive content that might arise mid-session. Part of our Session 0 will involve discussing players’ comfort levels with potentially triggering topics, and the game can be altered to minimize or even avoid certain subject matter. Players who join mid-campaign should discuss these topics with the Keeper during weekly office hours. Certain themes are so central to the text that to remove them from the game would be to destroy the campaign’s fundamental premise. Body horror and insanity are the bread and butter of Lovecraft’s mythos, and character death is an expectation more than a possibility. This specific campaign additionally deals with themes of predation, abuse, social isolation, obsession, and self-harm. Some players may be mind controlled, while the campaign’s inciting incident involves the death of a child. Tabletop role-playing games are meant to be an escape from the horrors of the real world, and as a queer woman, I pride myself on making my tables a safe and inclusive environment for all. Above-table prejudices such as racism, misogyny, homophobia, and transphobia are unacceptable at my table and will lead to your immediate removal from a session without refund, as well as a ban from all present and future tables hosted by this Keeper.
