About the adventure
This one shot is for anyone with any RPG experience! The First Step is a literal first step into the Stormlight RPG. The Stormlight RPG is a D20 TTRPG very similar to Dungeons and Dragons. There are some key differences, but it is a lot of fun and this one-shot does a really good job of walking the players through character creation and the mechanics of the game! If you don't know the world of Roshar or Brandon Sanderson's Comsere that's ok! It will just be a new fantastical setting for you. The setting is classic medieval fantasy with a unique blend of a fun magic system and interesting advances in technology. I'm really excited to describe this world and see how players use the magic mechanics and technology. It's a very unique setting with dynamic fauna and flora that will be really awesome to play in. The theme of the one shot is more survival than anything, but there is downtime and role play conversations to be had throughout. The first part of the game is a lot of fast paced decisions that help build your character while the second part of the game focuses more on character interactions.

About me
My name is Andrew and I’m a 26 year old from STL. I grew up homeschooled so growing up my siblings and I would play make believe a lot. All through high school and through most of college I was acting in lead roles (villains and protagonists) in theater. I was also in a choir through middle school and high school so I’m comfortable doing singing parts. I have my BLS in Paramedicine but decided to go back to my roots and grow plants for a living. I started playing DND when my siblings took an interest in it when I was 16. I soon fell in love with the system and TTRPG’s in general. It was a while before I actually DM’d my first campaign and it went terribly. I leveled up my players too fast and gave them way too powerful of magic items to the point where they whomped everything I put in their way or got downed in one hit. However everyone still had a fun time and I learned a lot from it. Since then I’ve ran a few flavorful one-shots including a homebrew swashbuckling encounter with crew morale having positive or negative effects. I’ve also read up on Pathfinder, Daggerheart, and the Cosmere RPG which I am so excited about. Overall I’m a relatively new DM with a willingness to work with my players and make sure everyone is having a fun time!
View Profile →Character creation
Creating your character
Character creation will happen as you make choices in the game. As situations arise in game, multiple choices or resources that could be useful to the character in different ways will be offered and based on what the player chooses their character will receive an item or weapon or increase in a stat attribute. Starting level will be zero but we will end with a level 1 character. If you'd like to reference a book you could look at the Stormlight Handbook or the Welcome to Roshar book. You should not refer to The First Step or The Stormlight World Guide.
What to expect

What Andrew Mason brings to the table
I love everything about TTRPG's from the roleplay to crunchy combat. What I love most is creating opportunities for my players to shine and feel a connection with the world and their characters. My games have a good foundation of prep and world building with the meat being player-world interactions and toppings of off the cuff wildness. I love role play and chill player conversations but I also love massive combat and putting players in intense situations. I’m also really big on descriptions of the scene and environment, I try my best at animal sounds (even when they come out goofy) and I do my best to have different voices for immersion. I’m not the best with accents but I’m always trying to get better. I love love love working with my players and inviting them into integrating their character into the world and party. My goal is to make every session have something good for everyone. I try for the most part to stick to the rules because it makes the world feel more real, but Rule of Cool is definitely on the table as well. I simply try to make it work with rules as much as possible.
Homebrew rules
So far I have no homebrew rules for this new system but we'll see how it goes!

How Andrew Mason creates a safe table
Session 0 is essential in my mind. I like to set a list of expectations right away to let you know how the game will run and what you can expect from it. I'll also tell you what I expect of my players and what my players can expect from me. Breaks and an open style of discussion are my favorite ways to communicate and destress.
