About the adventure

This D&D 5e game is an introduction to the Grimhollow world of Etheris. Here, where undead rule and life seems dark lie secrets and heroes who bring small bits of hope and light to the darkness. Magic is viewed with suspicion, but usually appreciated if used for the good of the people. Dark themes are explored but usually used as inspiration for good.

About me

I started playing role-playing games with my dad and some of his work friends in middle school. That was about 20 years ago. I have played Call of Cthulhu, D&D 3.5, 5e, and pathfinder 1e. I hope to bring a fun experience to everyone and introduce people to play more and more. My favorite system so far is 5e using some homebrew from Kobold Press and Grim Hallow however I have been expanding my gaming experience to other systems with everything that has been going on. I started looking to host games on StartPlaying to help fit my schedule as I work most weekends and have recently wanted to try DMing a wider audience.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation can be done before the session with me or during session zero. Characters will be starting at level 1. Stats will be point buy or standard array. Players will begin with a transformation or ability (this will be discussed during session zero, but can be kept a secret) and one feat. Grim Hollow campaign guide and Player guide will be provided; otherwise, characters can be made with official 5e books unless approved before session zero. we will be making characters on roll20

What Mike brings to the table

I tend to have tactical combat and creative magic uses. For this campaign, I will have some homebrew rules, but stick with Rules as Intended with 5e rules.

Homebrew rules

Drinking a potion is a bonus action or full HP as an action. If you drop below 0 HP you gain a level of exhaustion. Getting up from prone gives you an opportunity attack. Flanking gives a +2 but surrounding an enemy gives a +5. You are allowed 3 companions, these can be familiars, summons, or hired companions. Advanced weapons, alchemy, and magic exist Brutal Critical, you can either deal max damage plus roll or normal damage plus a crumpling effect. (The person might lose use of a limb for a turn or might be blinded for a round.) Transformations turn you slowly into magical creatures (for better or worse) Contamination slowly corrupts your body or soul, but can grant you lots of power

Safety

How Mike creates a safe table

Session 0, Fade to Black, lines and Veils, along with red, yellow, and green cards. After any session, I am available to talk about how the session went. Before session zero, a small questionnaire will be given so I can avoid certain topics. Frequent campfire moments will break up the dark monotony that can happen in a Dark fantasy.
