About the adventure

Obojima is a campaign setting published by 1985 Games that seeks to recreate the feeling of watching a studio Ghibli film. It is a world filled with pastoral fields of gently swaying flowers, jellyfish that swim through the air, vending machines filled with magical items & 80s technology, tricksome spirits, and devilish demons. It seeks to present moments of excitement nestled tenderly between the cozy and comfortable. In their own words: "Obojima is a world full of magic and spirits; where people live and explore, and where there are festivals for every occasion. Although life here is mostly idyllic with farmers tilling their fields and shepherds tending to their sheep dragons, there is plenty of adventure to be had. Travelers will find their fair share of it by simply walking from village to village, - following rumors and spirit companions, and allowing the strange and wonderful tales of the tall grass to unfold. But that isn’t to say that everything in the world of Obojima is pastoral and easy going. There are monsters and plenty of peril here that the GM can use to turn a delightful stroll through the countryside into a harrowing situation where blades, bloodshed, and arcane magics are required. These contrasting facets of Obojima make for compelling storytelling as your moments of danger will feel that much more dangerous and your moments of tranquility will feel that much more earned." A low-level campaign setting that is friendly to new and seasoned players alike, Obojima has its own ancestries, subclasses, and lore that is completely self-contained. Everything you need to know about the Island and its inhabitants exists within it's pages, lovingly crafted and furnished with beautiful illustrations. My intentions with this campaign is to take you on a journey through four published adventures for Obojima lovingly altered and tied together, before finishing with an adventure I've written myself! We will be using the Alchemy Virtual Tabletop to run the game which is user friendly and intuitive. That said, I will happily support you through learning its ins and outs! Every scene is supported with stunning visuals, animations, music, and ambience! I will be using art from the book itself, and additional maps & images that invoke that same Studio Ghibli feel! There will be plenty of support for making your characters and a 'session 0' where you will be given everything you need to immerse yourself in this wonderful world! If you want: - A whimsical, cinematic adventure - Immersive roleplay in a living world - Stunning visuals and music - An alternative to the gritty and grim -A cast of memorable NPCs and creatures then this is the campaign for you! Rewind that cassette, hop on your bike, and ride with me across the Gale Fields! Adventure Awaits!

About me

Greetings, Traveler! My name is Lewellyn (But you can call me Lew) and this is my little passion project, OVERGROWN Games. Lemme tell you a bit about it~! THE SHORT AND SWEET VERSION: The most important bit: There is a seat for everyone at my table, no matter how many experience points you've got. Do you want to play games that are… 🐣🐥 friendly to new and seasoned role players alike; 🧠🌩️ easy to pick up and play, with plenty of prompts to spark your imagination; ⚠️👀 clear and upfront, with the genre and content warnings on the label so you know what to expect; 🚫🤖 free of AI generated art or writing; 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ hosted in a safe and inclusive play environment; and 🔊🎙️ actively provided Discord support for trouble-shooting, character building and backstory work? Excellent - because that's exactly what I strive to provide you with at OVERGROWN Games! THE LONG, LORE-HEAVY VERSION: Before I began my tabletop journey, I spent a number of years in film school, participated in creative writing courses, and even enjoyed a brief career as a songwriter, so telling stories has always been my focus in life since I was a kid. I used to go to the local bookstore and read through the Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual over and over again before I ever got my grubby paws on a copy of my own. Now I had played a bit here and there, but my GMing journey began much later, out in the wastelands of 'Mutant: Year Zero' before I ever got around to running Dungeons & Dragons. I really wanted to try my hand at running games, and I wanted something that would be easy to to learn and introduce new players to. Mutant: YZ offered a simple, one-book solution and it wasn't long before I was leading groups of wanderers across a radiation-blasted wasteland in search for supplies and salvation! At the time, I found the 'world's most-played RPG' to be a rather daunting (and expensive) undertaking with all its different books, and I wanted something that was easy to learn, but more importantly easy to teach. I had heard so many people in my community express their desire to try roleplaying, but I took notice of how they felt resistant, or intimidated like I did. Many people in my life believed that table top games were awkward and fringe, and I wanted to try and change that perception by hosting some events out of my home with game systems that were easy to pick up and play – allowing me to watch as my family and my community took their first steps into the unknown. Giving people a foot in the door by providing easy and fun gameplay opportunities (Like those found in Ben Wray's Roll for Shoes, or John Harper's Lasers & Feelings) allowed me to introduce tabletop roleplaying games to those in my life who would normally shy away from the wonderful world of collaborative storytelling by hooking them with quick (and often humorous) and easy mechanics. Eventually, I began carrying a couple dice with me wherever I went. Turns out that most people have a story inside them they really want to tell, and all you need to do is give them the space to tell it. Since then I have explored many more TTRPGs, ranging across a multitude of genres and levels of complexity. No longer intimidated by D&D, I have since run a number of games, including a 3+ year romp through an entirely homebrewed world that I built with the players! I have led and facilitated games of Shadowrun, D&D 5e, MORKborg, Blades in the Dark, Monster of the Week; dozens upon dozens of indie games; and - of course - my first true love, Mutant: Year Zero. Currently I attend workshops in the hopes of becoming a game designer myself! Most recently I attended a workshop called, "Designing Games that Matter", run by the dynamite Avery Alder, (creator of The Quiet Year and Monster Hearts). I highly recommend checking out her stuff! All in all, roleplaying is an incredible tool for building confidence, learning new skills, and creating a space that welcomes the whimsical and imaginative and deeply important to me. Play is an integral part of the human experience, and the most rewarding part of it all is watching players get excited about their characters and seeing them grow as players, whether its transitioning from third-person to first-person roleplaying, investing themselves in the world, or simply learning to embrace vulnerability a bit more! So wherever you may fall, I can’t wait to play~! With boundless love and joy, Lewellyn

Character creation

Creating your character

All players will be given a link to the campaign on D&DBeyond and a link to the game in Alchemy. Characters can be created in either place under guidelines that I will provide upon signing up. You will be required to read a few pages from the book before building your character! There will be a session 0 for everyone to get to know each other and share ideas. We will lock-in our characters, discuss what binds them, and what their goals are. From there, the first arc of the adventure will be run as a "flashback" starting at level 2, and jumping straight to level 3 from there. Players are encouraged to build their characters around the subclasses from the Obojima book. There will be an in-game time skip of 3 months between the first and second adventure to account for your character's new powers and to set them up for an epic saga that will take them across the island of Obojima! I will be available on discord to discuss any character creation concerns, and answer any questions you may have!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will be required to sign-up for Alchemy Virtual Tabletop! Its free, its quick and all you need is an e-mail account to do it. You can play it in browser, or download the Alchemy desktop application. Whatever you prefer! I will also invite you to my discord server and my D&DBeyond campaign so you can craft your character!

What Lew (Overgrown Games) brings to the table

I use animated scenes, beautifully illustrated maps, and the Alchemy Virtual Tabletop to tell immersive, vibrant stories. I run creatures that react like creatures, and NPCs whose motivations and behaviors make them feel alive. The bandits don't just swing at you, they point their swords and make demands first. Combat isn't always about slaying all your enemies. Sometimes a thrashed combatant will yield, bargain, or try to run away. There are exceptions of course, but generally speaking there will usually be an alternative solution to fighting to the death. I try to treat magic and martial prowess as feats of wonder for all who behold them, rather than just mechanical effects on a game board. You are the heroes, and heroes inspire awe! To me, roleplaying is about making memories and moments together, and that is what I aim to offer at my table. I lean into the cinematic with intensity and a flare for the dramatic~! I respond to player's backstories with enthusiasm and empower you to tell truly epic stories by supporting your character with a colorful supporting cast, personal stakes, and by spotlighting their expertise and competency. I will help you craft your character in a way that suits the kind of story you want to tell. I'm here to help you be the hero. For example, if you take the 'Giant Slayer' feat, then there will be giants to fight. You won't have to worry about your moment never coming, I promise! I don't just do character voices, I try to bring them to life and narrate with theatrical aplomb. Big or small, every character is an opportunity for unique personalities, mannerisms, and motives. High rolls and low rolls will be celebrated. I believe in "failing forward" which means that even if the dice do not roll in your favor, you will never leave the table feeling like your character is a complete flop. I narrate to your strengths, which means its not just the barbarians dishing out the finishing blows that get the spotlight. Support classes, AC tanks, and utility players will all feel like their prowess matters! You have my word! The rules keep us honest and the game going, but I'm a big fan of big ideas and creative play! Ultimately my tables are a blend of 'Rules as Written' and 'Rule of Cool' -- whatever makes for a better experience for all! If all this sounds interesting, then you've come to right place! Lets dream big together!

Safety

How Lew (Overgrown Games) creates a safe table

Lines and Veils will be available 24/7 on Alchemy and session 0 will give everyone a chance to add their own. We will take short breaks where appropriate! My session 0's will walk us through our guiding principles and make sure everyone is on the same page. It will provide us opportunities to tie the party together, discuss motivations, and set the tone of your journey. I end my sessions with 'Stars & Wishes' where everyone gets an opportunity to talk about something they liked about the session, and something they'd like to see more of. This helps me make sure the story is moving in the direction the group wants. I'm always around for aftercare, and if any difficulty comes up I'm here to mediate, resolve, and repair where able. When it comes to X-cards, its my hope that it never comes to that, by providing everyone with clear tonal expectations. Still, there is always a chance that something may happen that makes a player uncomfortable, and X-cards (stop scene and pivot without explanation), N-cards (proceed with caution), and O-cards (Check-in) will be utilized as digital messages, or on video if that is something everyone agrees to do. The Content Warnings are what come baked into the setting. Sometimes players want to address things in their life through their characters. I try to make space for that while keeping to the tone of the setting, and making sure everyone else at the table is comfortable. Once they've been reviewed by all, if its not on the list its not in the game! Note that some of these only show up in light or uncommon ways, and I urge you to ask me about any content warnings that concern you. Making sure you feel safe matters to me. I'm always open to learning and integrating other safety rules! If you have one that you like, let me know!
