About the adventure

The city of Karanak teeters on the brink. As Odium’s army closes in, a highstorm rages overhead, and the people cry out for heroes. You and your companions must make a fateful choice: defend the Soulcaster whose magic keeps the city alive, or risk everything to free innocent singers imprisoned behind enemy lines. This one-shot adventure is built for 3rd-level characters and packed with moral choices, tense battles, and the possibility of swearing the First Ideal—unlocking the first spark of Radiant power. No knowledge of the novels is required; the story is designed to welcome both newcomers and long-time fans. Play will balance tactical combat with roleplay, letting you shape not only the outcome of the battle but the future of Roshar’s fragile human–singer relations. Will you side with pragmatic generals, or listen to the voices calling for freedom and mercy?

About me

My first experience with TTRPGs was two and a half sessions of Rolemaster. If you know that system, you know it's not the greatest starting point for a beginner. Added to that, our GM was trying to run this game while taking care of a newborn and finishing up med school. Despite the rocky start, I was hooked, but I didn't know anyone else at the time who could run a game at all. So I started my own D&D campaign and have been GMing ever since! I run RPGs for the stories, the surprise, and the drama. My goal is always to create an atmosphere where the whole group can explore the stories that interest them. My favorite moments in any game are when things feel cool, cinematic, heartfelt, or badass. That moment when the barbarian leaps through the wall of flame, clothes smoldering, screaming in rage. Or that moment when the Netrunner finally breaks into the top-secret mainframe to loot secrets from the rich and powerful, as a desperate firefight rages around them. But most importantly, the very best moment is when I can tell that the players have forgotten that they're sitting in a chair at a desk, and are having a shared experience that takes them away from their lives and which they'll remember for years. But I've never been satisfied with just a standard D&D campaign or two; I've run games in a dozen or so systems at this point, and I'm always excited to try new ones! I even have experience running custom one- and two-player campaigns, which can be a great way to have a more in-depth, character-driven experience, and also help to alleviate scheduling difficulties. If you're interested in something like that, please feel free to message me or hit the button that says "Book GM," and we can start talking about the specifics!

Character creation

Creating your character

This adventure uses pre-generated characters so we can focus on the story right away! You’ll pick from a set of level 3 characters, including heroes close to swearing the First Ideal. You’ll be free to add personal touches—such as names, backgrounds, and roleplay style—to make the character your own. You don’t need to bring any materials or prior rules knowledge; everything you need will be ready for you when you connect to start the game!

The current party

There are six pregenerated characters overall, and two of them are central to the plot; Jezri (an Alethi soldier and Windrunner on the verge of saying the first ideal) and Kethrin (a Singer leader and Willshaper on the verge of saying the first ideal). Secondary PCs will still have plenty to do, but are likely to have slightly less personal stake in the plot. They are: - Ikkoma, an Azish Diplomat - Holtid, a Singer Spy/Thief - Talako, a Horneater Archer/Assassin - Taren, an Alethi Strategist and Edgedancer of the First Ideal So far, Jezri has been claimed by a player, but all other characters are available!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Please create a free Roll20 and Discord account before the game. We’ll use Roll20 for character sheets and visuals, and Discord for all voice chat and pre-game communication. If you prefer, you may use Demiplane for your sheet, though it’s optional! Plan to test your audio setup ahead of time—using a headset or push-to-talk makes a big difference in keeping the session clear and enjoyable for everyone.

What Colby brings to the table

You’ll choose from a selection of pre-generated level 3 characters, including heroes close to swearing the First Ideal. Each has strong story hooks, and you’ll get to add your own personal touch. Expect a session full of tough moral choices, storm-driven action, and the chance to influence Roshar’s fate. I run rules-as-written for clarity, but I’ll also embrace cinematic and heroic player choices when the story calls for it.

Safety

How Colby creates a safe table

The Stormlight Archive novels are best known for three things: - Incredible world-building and a setting completely different from anything else you've seen in fantasy - Massive page counts - A magic system largely based on the main characters' struggles with mental health. This last factor can't be overstated, in that your character will be as broken as they are heroic. Therefore, mentions of trauma, abuse, grief, addiction, and severe mental disorders are integral to the setting. I will not shy away from this theme, so if any of these topics could be difficult for you, please be prepared to talk about your boundaries before our game starts!
