Daggerheart | Beast Feast | Beginner Friendly
The magical lure keeping the local monsters in vast, underground caverns is malfunctioning. Can you gather, cook, and eat your way to a solution?
About the adventure
Session 0 is Free In this beginner-friendly game of Daggerheart, you will assume the role of an adventurer, one of humble origins who has answered the call to try and protect their town. An old magic, a lure, has kept the local monster population at bay, drawing them into sprawling underground caverns. Now that the magic is fading, it is becoming too dangerous to delve into the lower levels of the caverns to harvest food. This is where you come in. Perhaps you are Clank Barista whose body is designed to serve coffee, you follow a strict Guardian's code to protect your patrons. Perhaps you work for a local delivery service run my fauns, using your talents as a rogue to nimbly leap over rooftops and make the best time possible. Perhaps you are the local mascot for a restaurant, channelling your gifts as a bard into marketing. Or you might even be a chef, armed with a knife and frying pan who is going to get their ingredients one way or the other. Whoever you are, the point is, you have been called to look into the problem. Given the food shortages, you are going to have to use the strange ingredients you collect from the monsters you slay to feed yourselves along the way. The game is a light-hearted adventure romp that is, by design, a little bit goofy. The slimes and oozes are made of jams and butter; the hell boar bacon is divine; the dragons breathe molten chocolate. We can get a little weird with this story and world as we tell our story, pausing just long enough for the emotional beats to sneak up and punch us in the gut. The stakes are comparatively low and the steaks are juicy. It's the perfect place to try out the system.

About me
I am an Australian teacher who has over a decade of experience with ttrpg, both as a player and Storyteller, across well over a dozen systems. When I run games, I endeavour to strike a firm balance between the game mechanics and rule of cool, often letting the game system guide how much I lean into one or the other. Ultimately, the fun and safety of everyone on the table is my top priority, so I try to reach a consensus on game expectations in Session 0 and utilize tools like lines and veils to ensure my players are having a consistently good time.

Proficiencies
Players say this GM is great at:
Creativity
Teacher
Voices
I have played various ttrpgs with Chris over the years, both online and in person. His GM-ing style is engaging, reactive to the players and their decisions, inclusive, and certainly friendly to beginners who are still learning the ropes of a system. Chris brings the game world and its denizens to life with his descriptions and use of unique character voices. I have always had fun playing in one of Chris's games!
Character creation
Creating your character
Character Creation will occur in Session 0 and, optionally, in the pre-Session 0 window of time. We will use Demiplane and import the sheets into Roll20. My subscription allows me to share access to the Core Rulebook with my players, you just need the free account. We will be starting at Level 1. All of the Core classes are available except for Druid. The Shapeshifting Feature can easily position a Druid to outperform other classes in what would normally be their niche, which I feel runs against the spirit of the System as it is presented. Asking a player to 'not use their Druid Class features too much' to mitigate this potential clash of design principle would also be a bummer, so I have simply decided not to allow them. In exchange, I AM allowing the Void (playtest) classes that are available on Demiplane, if you would like to try one of them out.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
You will need Discord, a Roll20 Account, and a Demiplane Account. You will also need a microphone for voice chat.
What Chris brings to the table
I provide character voices. Maps. Music (some ambient, sometimes a Spotify link for a theme song if I feel it's appropriate). Handouts with images and little lore snippets. Daggerheart is practically designed around the rule of cool, so I will lean into that within reason. That is, if something is simply impossible for your character (i.e. 'I want to jump into the Sun') I will not ask for a roll and simply let you know it is not an achievable action.

Safety
How Chris creates a safe table
I use Lines and Veils. I also have an 'open door' policy, as it were. If you ever want to touch base about the game, you are always welcome to reach out. I am also a huge advocate of what I consider to be the Golden Rule: treat others the way you want to be treated.
