Meet the Game Master
About me
I’ve been running games every week for the past three years, creating epic, player-driven adventures. As a laid-back, 'rule of cool' Dungeon Master, I focus on fun, creativity, and empowering my players to be the true heroes of the story. My worlds are rich with lore, but the most important part of any game is the players and their choices. Whether you're a veteran or brand new to the game, I strive to make every session exciting, immersive, and memorable.

Creating your character
For character creation, we’ll have a free Session Zero before the adventure begins. This session will focus on discussing character concepts, backgrounds, and how your characters fit into the world of Stormwreck Isle. We’ll go over everything from your character’s motivations to their relationship with the rest of the party, ensuring we all start with a solid foundation. When it comes to stats, players can choose between standard array or point buy to create their characters, allowing for flexibility and balance. The starting level will be 1, giving you a fresh start in this new world! Character creation will take place on D&D Beyond, and you’ll be using the Beyond VTT browser extension to bring your character to life on the virtual tabletop. This will ensure all your abilities and features are easily accessible during gameplay. You can refer to any official D&D 5e content, but please avoid third-party books or materials that I’m not familiar with. I’ll help guide you through the process, ensuring everyone feels comfortable and excited about their character!
What to expect
Preparing for the session
To prepare for the game, players will need a good quality microphone for clear communication during gameplay (a webcam is not required). You’ll also need an account on D&D Beyond, where we’ll be creating characters together during our Session Zero. To use your character sheet in-game, you’ll need the Beyond VTT browser extension. There's no need to read the rules ahead of time—I'll guide you through everything, but if you'd like, you can familiarize yourself with your character's abilities, race, and class to get a head start. The most important thing is to come with an open mind, a sense of adventure, and an eagerness to have fun!
What DM Derek brings to the table
I bring a fully immersive D&D experience with custom maps, Roll20 as our Virtual Tabletop (VTT), and tons of content on D&D Beyond to make character creation and gameplay smooth and accessible. My games feature music and ambient sounds to set the mood, along with distinct character voices to bring NPCs to life. I run a laid-back, rule-of-cool style game where creativity is encouraged, and fun comes first.

How DM Derek creates a safe table
I’ll send out a Lines and Veils document before the first session to establish boundaries around sensitive topics, and we’ll go over everything in Session Zero to ensure everyone is comfortable. The game will be lighthearted and fun, with a focus on collaboration and enjoyment. For aftercare, I’m always open to checking in with players if they need to talk or decompress. We’ll use clear communication for X’s, N’s, and O’s (topics players want to avoid) through messages or digital tools, ensuring everyone’s comfort throughout the campaign.
