About the adventure

I introduce to you a world where Strahd's minions and beats aren't the strangest thing prowling the corners of Barovia, and instead one must ask themselves just how terrified they are of the idea of...vampiric mind flayers? A passage has been opened within the lands of Barovia to some distant realm of madness, releasing into the wilds a creature that even Strahd themselves find perverse and unnatural, a corruption of something that already torments the Lord of the lands, inciting them to cleanse Barovia by any means, Whether this means you'll find an ally in the Lord Strahd, or be swept within their machinations to cleanse the lands, that is to be discovered. It matters not if you somehow wandered into these lands of your own accord, seeking to hunt that which prowls in the night, or if you were grabbed by the mists from a moment of safety in your life, you find yourselves in the darkness, you must survive with very little hope of escape. This campaign is not a hack-and-slash, or an endless dungeon-delving campaign. There are no dragons or beholders or Underdark adventures. There’s virtually no treasure without a price, because acquiring wealth is not a goal. Life is the goal. Ending the eternal darkness is the goal. CoS is set in a mountainous eastern-European-like settling inhabited almost entirely by humans, and their nightmares. The game isn't as rewarding the intricacies of game mechanics. It’s a deeply narrative tale of horror and woe that rewards roleplaying and character immersion. It’s about as emotional an experience as you’ll find in any roleplaying game. The setting explores fear and isolation and a deep sense of impending doom. It features the story about a handful of good people who undertake the nearly hopeless fight to rekindle hope in a cursed land. Trigger warnings include a central theme of abusive behavior, slavery, child abuse, child death, massacre and genocide, body horror, torture themes, humans eating humans, demonic-like influences over mortals, and other potentially volatile topics we should discuss and set rules for in advance. All can be downplayed to accommodate the players’ desires except for a storyline involving threats to force a human into an unwanted marriage. If you aren’t disturbed by most modern horror movies, you will likely not be distressed by the campaign’s horror themes, but discussing and setting borders up front is crucial. This is a campaign that discards D&D’s usual assumptions that the odds of prevailing are in the the PC’s favor. It’s dark and gritty. It focused on diplomacy and guile and human interaction as much as it does in combat and magic. You may be the good guys, but your status as future heroes is very much in doubt. Some if not all of you will die before it’s over. For some of you, the best you will likely be able to achieve is dying well. And death here is not necessarily as simple as sniffing out the candle. The campaign’s lethality level and nightmarish mood feels as close to

About me

Hello there! My name is Ollie and I've been in the dice rolling scene for over 20 years now. I started with learning 3.5 at a young age and was taught most of my math through D&D and Magic by a family of old-school nerds. I've carried this passion with me throughout my years and have been DMing at a variety of scenes with the intent to share the gift of tabletop gaming with the people around me and to foster that creativity in others. I’ve taught home school groups how to play the game, DMed for large scale discord server campaigns of 12+ members, sat down with friends and family in the basement with snacks and dice, hosted AL at local shops and now for several years I've been DMing full-time online. I enjoy creating safe spaces for people who don't have the same accessibility to other games, or in-person shops. My campaigns, and servers are safe spaces centered around inclusive role-playing games where you can become the characters you want to be, and explore new worlds. I believe that in the past few years we've all taken to adapting to the online environment fairly well, and such I do my best to utilize tools such as turn base interactions, and other systems focused on making sure all voices are heard during those crucial moments. In the end, I want you to be comfortable and feel confident in sharing your story with others. One of my biggest obstacles as a DM is a lack of ability to picture things in my head, otherwise known as Aphantasia. I believe this has produced a unique descriptive style that allows me to focus on specific details which are crucial to setting a scene, while leaving space for you to fill in (or ask for) details. So regardless of what style of campaign you’re looking for, I promise to provide a massive, sprawling world that is reactive to your presence, choices, and weekly sessions that leave you hanging on the edge of your dice tray to see what happens next.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation is incredible flexible in this campaign! We use the OG 2014 Rules as a base for balancing classes and mechanics, then we apply the modifications that future supplements such as Tasha's and Xanathar's have given us such as allowing you to place your +2/+1 modifiers where you'd like, or change the proficiencies allowed by backgrounds, or even as far as allowing you to change your spell-casting ability. Players who would like to use Homebrew are welcome to submit it to me for review, as is the same with UA content. For the most part, we are very accommodating and accepting of unique, wild, and silly character concepts as long as they fit the general theme of the campaign, and aren't disruptive to gameplay. Players who would like to use the new 2024 rule-set for creating characters are more than welcome to do so! It's integrated with the current rules and mechanics in the same way homebrew would be, with careful considerations to make sure you are able to live your power fantasy and create a functioning character. ~ Characters will be created at level 3, with max HP and a starting feat, replacing any feats granted by other character creation options (such as through your heritage or background). ~ Standard array: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8 ~ Characters have starting equipment defined by their class and background and an additional 1000gp to purchase items and supplies. ~ Follow the updated creation rules for Racial bonuses and proficiency laid out in Xanathar’s and Tasha’s if desired. (Stating that the +2 and +1 Racial bonuses can be applied to any stat of your choosing) ~Characters may be created through DnD beyond or Roll20 as long as you also have a Roll20 account and can load the VTT ~ Ideally characters are crafted through communication with me via discord prior to session, however 30+ minutes are set aside before start time of sessions to work on technical difficulties or character questions.

Homebrew rules

- Inspiration is stored, a number of them equal to your proficiency modifier. Inspiration can be used to re-roll any dice rolled by a player, and can be used consequentially either until you are empty or satisfied with the resulting number. Inspiration can be transferred from player to player. - Consuming a potion is a bonus action, administering a potion is an action. - Using your action to cast a 1st level or higher spell, allows you to use your bonus action to cast a cantrip with a casting time of Action of bonus action. The leveled spell must be cast first. - Multiple instances of advantage and disadvantage apply a stacking +/-2 modifier. Attacking a prone target, with a ally in proximity, and using reckless attack will result in advantage and +4 to the attack roll. Starting at level 8 players can concentrate on two spells at a time, incurring disadvantage on all concentration saves, and a resulting failure ends both spells. - Starting feat for all characters (replaces innate starting feat granted by some heritages and backgrounds)

How Ollie creates a safe table

Players will have a one-on-one conversation with DM concerning any Lines & Veils and be given open room to express any relevant information beforehand. Afterwards is added to a community server and given a role that determines if they receive pings for available games (optional). During sessions, players are invited to verbally or text communicate upon any discomfort or concerns that arise. Sessions contain voice & virtual tabletop provided by the DM, and require Voice from the players (video is optional). These sessions are a safe place for neurodivergent players and those with audio processing disorders as conversational systems will be in place to make sure we can all be comfortable and communicate. Sessions will use digital maps with miniture tokens representing characters during combat scenes, with digital or physical dice rolling (players choice!). Most non-combat scenes will take place in theater of the mind with supported art when possible. Players can expect: A blended environment where they will be encouraged to talk and act in character. There is no penalty for not doing so, but immersion & engagement is appreciated. Players can expect frequent, moderately challenging combat which may involve long periods of waiting and active listening during other players turns. Depending on the complexity of the player's class they may need to spend additional time working on character and leveling. Players will be engaged in a multitude of different methods of play to ensure that each session is diverse and interesting. Interactions will range anywhere from puzzles, riddles, dungeon crawls, and combat.
