Report Adventure

About the adventure

Once upon a time, in the Fog of the early spring, you set out into the world famous Margreve forest. Some say you were plagued by strange dreams, or perhaps an overactive sense of adventure, but regardless you lot found yourselves tangled up into the machinations of esoteric and old spirits, and pitted against a big, bad beast who would be king in a race to find a small girl and prove your respective people's worth to a forest older then the gods. I will supply all player materials you are free to use via Roll20's compendium content sharing. This will include all third party material you can use freely, with the exception of a handful of spells I will ask we avoid from the greater pool I provide. This will all be enumerated on my Discord server, and these are spells I remove mostly to prevent game imbalance. And, if for whatever reason life won't let you make a character, I can provide pre-generated characters upon request if given enough lead time. (A module by Dan Voyce, published by Kobold Press in the anthology "Tales from the Old Margreve" for 5e, to be ran as a One Shot.)

About me

*Lightning snaps, the earth trembles, and a mighty explosive 'thud' echoes through the hazey desert. Stepping forth from a place he was not there before, a mysterious human man in a fancy, though antiquated, hat - and the talking frog beside him - beckons you closer to talk...* My name is Mitchell Phelps, AKA my internet pseudonym "Lazzamore", which I took after from the cartoon frog character you see with me in my picture - his name is "Laz Lazzamore". He's pretty chill for the most part. I have been running TTRPGs both virtually and in person for 7+ years now, and I am proficient in D&D 5e primarily and a bit with PF1e as well. When I run, I like my players to have some ownership of the story and direction, though I am competent in running games with more or less sandbox to the taste of my party. I want my players to enjoy themselves as a group as much as possible and that is really my ultimate job when setting up these games. Anyways, there are some aspects of play I emphasize more then others, so I will list them here to give you an idea of my playstyle as you decide whether it fits with yours or not. - I love eccentric solutions to problems, and reward players for out of the box thinking to problems I present them. - When I present a combat, I try to make them to be on the harder side, because I like long stints of RP broken up by occasional combats that are big and meaningful. This applies less so in dungeon-styled games and more so in other sorts of campaigns. - Intelligent enemies will be, well, intelligent, and often you can have the option to negotiate, if it is logical for that to occur. I also don't really play with the trope of humanoid monsters that are irredeemable, it just isn't really how I tell stories and doesn't come naturally to me, so any non-supernatural, sentient race is liable to contain good and evil members. - I tend to run on the shorter side of sessions (2.5-4 hours) and have a decently quick pace due to my experience being mostly in the realm of self-contained Organized Play sessions. I'm very proud of the community I help manage in that area. Feel free to ask about my OP group if you come to enjoy my GMing and want to game with me outside of longer-form campaigns! - I will observe content requests pertaining to avoiding your triggers after I am told of them. A detailed discussion of each players lines and veils, among other safety tools I am practiced with, will be had during session 0. - I value roleplay and, while my pace is quick, I try to allow for plenty of it. I know when I play, I appreciate the space to express my characters thoughts, and I try to leave enough room to my players for that, as long they don't infringe on the spotlight of one and other.

Character creation

Creating your character

Please use the Roll20 I will provide to you to build your character; D&D online, with most any VTT, is cantankerous - but this way I can help you! We will use 2024 rules to make our characters. However, you are free to use 2014 subclasses and races if they weren't updated with the new PHB. I have many third party subclasses (and even full classes) you are thus free to use; In the case of full classes (Artificer, and I have a Witch class and a Theurge class), they are usable too. I will mandate the use of 2024 styled backgrounds and character creation in all other ways for consistency. For simplicity we will be using point buy for our stats, and taking averages for our hit points after level 1, no rolling in those stages. You will have some magic items from your characters previous off-screen exploits: You get to pick any two permanent uncommon items from any book WOTC publishes, and then two more uncommon consumable items. You may instead replace an uncommon consumable or permanent item with two commons of the same sort. Once you have picked them, send them to me for approval; I'm cool with most things but will ask you not cheese the boss into the astral plane with bags of holding!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

- You will need a decent Mic, a free Discord account and a free Roll20 account. - I would appreciate if you understand how your character is played before sitting down at game time. We don't have a huge window for gaming and I want you to get the most out of it, so we want our gaming time to be as little rules explanation as we can manage so we can focus on the story and action.

What Mitchell Phelps brings to the table

- I will use light audio ambience for immersion and fully use tactical combat with maps from artists I like to support, so be prepared to at least select a default token for your character in combat. - I tend to follow Rules as Written when intent or impact on the game is ambiguous, but I do reserve the right to adjudicate against how it is written to be more fun, but not when I feel it makes the game too easy or it is too far fetched (the latter condition will sometimes work the other way, too, when dealing with RAW) - I want to facilitate a story with you. Your collective engagement in the story is my top priority, so I'm less interested in challenging combats and dungeon crawling unless it is time for such things in the story. In this particular adventure there isn't any dungeon crawling, but there are some boss fights I will try to be tough on. - I have been described as more forgiving with combats and character death, though since this One Shot is occurring in a vacuum, that shouldn't be as large of an issue. It is true though; I prefer for parties to 'fail forward' rather then situations that just kill them, and outside of one shots tend to put wide space between combats.

Homebrew rules

- Drinking any potion is a bonus action - I use flanking and it grants +2 to hit instead of advantage - you may substitute an Attack of Opportunity with a Grapple attack.

Safety

How Mitchell Phelps creates a safe table

I use Lines and Veils, and would ask that you apprise me of any triggers pertaining to you before the game starts via Discord. I keep an open door policy or you may freely ask for a break. I will observe X, N and O cards, for best results send them to my discord via a Direct Message so it pops up on my screen and I don't miss it.
