About the adventure

Welcome to the Grim and Perilous world of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. Where everything is perilously grim. The Peasants are covered in muck and the nobles don't know the price of a gallon of milk. The scene pans in to the city of Ubersreik nestled in the bosom of the Grey Mountains. Graf Sigismund von Jungfreud has been deposed by the Emperor's army and the city is in a state of flux. The watch is severely undermanned, the city guard's loyalty is in doubt and dark forces take advantage of the chaos to advance their twisted plots. Meanwhile the factions of the city vie for power and the ultimate prize of Lordship of Ubersreik. A prize you might be be able to influence. The campaign follows a series of official adventures selected from the 4th Edition Starter Set, Ubersreik Adventures 1, 2 & 3, Rough Nights and Hard Days and a few earlier edition adventures updated for 4e with some added connective tissue. It is expected that each adventure will take 2-3 sessions including a few downtime between each adventure. Adventures will take the party all over the duchy based on the party mix. Adventures will include a good mix of mystery, tense and fast combat, and political intrigue. Not all problems need to be solved by combat (in fact some definitely shouldn't) creativity and exploration is encouraged and rewarded. Most of all players should be interested in interrogating the fiction around them developing a compelling character while leaving room to grow. They should be fans of the other characters, building connections with them and helping share the spotlight with other players. Players should create characters who have a reason to adventure in the Duchy of Ubersreik and have an interest in what happens to the city. This campaign isn't for folks that want to sail the Sea of Claws or sift through ashes in Middenheim. Similarly while there is no requirement to be a goody two shoes, overtly evil or ruinous characters can disrupt the party. Lets leave the book of Necromancy on the shelf please. Similarly characters that become overtly corrupted/mutated will be retired and players can create a new character. This isn’t a campaign for players that want to engage in PVP The episodal nature of the campaign means you can jump in give it a couple of sessions and jump out. Coming back later on if your circumstances change. The first episode planned for 2 sessions is 'Making The Rounds' from the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 4e Starter set. A great introduction to the city and the system. About me

I'm a 45 year old Brit living in the medieval town of Warwick, England. Though I've lived all over England, picking up a few accents as I go. I've been a regular player and GM of TTRPG since I was 15, starting with Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay and AD&D back in the 90's. My monthly face to face group started in Kent in 2002 with us gaming at least once a month for 23 years as a GM and a player. That group saw me through every edition of D&D, Pathfinder and the recent 4th edition of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay with circa 10,000 hours of gaming. I started online VTT gaming when Covid hit and haven't looked back. With three more online groups - two of which were new to TTRPGs. All three are still going now, playing either fortnightly or monthly. Roll20 was originally my VTT of choice due to the support for D&D but I now host Foundry because of its flexibility, and excellent support for WFRP. Online is great. I'm usually happy running games for veterans or complete beginners. Sharing a game you love is great! Some of the campaigns I've completed include... The Enemy Within Doomstones Ubersreik Adventures Paths of the Damned Night Below Cormy/Shadowdale/Anauroch Shackled City Age of Worms City of the Spider Queen Way of the Wicked Kingmaker Rise of the Runelords Shattered Star Skull & Shackles Curse of Strahd Tomb of Annihilation Baldur's Gate Descent Odyssey of the Dragonlords Dungeons of Drakenheim

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation will be completed out of session using the standard WFRP 4e character creation method. All currently released 4e books released on Foundry may be used though no laggards, cowards or Ogres need apply. Alternatively you can play one of six pre-generated characters balanced to match the rest of the XP of the party. Future characters will jump in on the same experience point total of the one they replace. For new players to the campaign they start with comparable XP to the rest of the party.

The current party

This is an episodic campaign where players can dip in for an adventure then come back to later when time and circumstances allow. Don't feel you need to commit to the whole run, though there will be themes and threads running through. Players are also free to retire characters to the DM and replace with a new character after any episode. More details on existing characters as the campaign progresses.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

- Join the campaign here on Start Playing - You'll be sent a link to the Campaign Discord we'll use for audio - Arrange a 45 minute mutually agreed session to create your character. - Find a picture for your character - On the day of the session use the web browser link to the Foundry Campaign provided in the discord. Some knowledge of the Warhammer World and the WFRP 4e system is helpful but not required or assumed.

What TheSword brings to the table

A safe and inclusive group to play with. Access to the Foundry with all the currently released Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 4th edition books and rules. Help learning how to play WFRP 4e from an experienced teacher. Vibrant and earthy NPCs from the Warhammer world with a variety of voices and accents. Complete with evocative artwork. Themed background music. A good working knowledge of the game system with a philosophy that the rule of cool means the DM and players should work together to find a way within the rules. Beautiful battle-maps or art to act as backdrops to scenes. Chance to explore a detailed Duchy of Ubersreik with plenty of Downtime and chance to develop your characters.

Homebrew rules

There are a handful of clarifications and optional rules I use in my games. Along with two house rules. Unless stated otherwise, every mechanical element from the WFRP 4e books released on Foundry to date is available. Where there is a choice or a clarification needed its detailed below. Don't worry if you're a new player and some of these don't make sense. They will eventually - or maybe they will never come up. They're more to make things clear for new players. Achievement based XP will be awarded at the end of each session (50-100 XP) with a bonus based on what skills the characters have used and what they have learned about the world. Fortune and Resolve will reset at the end of each adventure. 1. Developing Talents: A Talent can only be taken once in the first instance. However a talent can be taken a second time if you have completed the second tier of its career. It can be taken a third time if you have completed the third career... and so on. These can be improved even if you have left the career behind and all the normal XP costs apply. [Homebrew] 2: Group Advantage: The Up in Arms version of advantage that builds a shared pool of advantage that can be spent to gain bonuses, combat tricks and even extra actions. [Up in Arms] 3. Endeavours: We will be having plenty of downtime opportunity so the full endeavour system including options for enterprises, "Money to Burn", Training etc. [Core Rulebook]. Training out of career follows the normal rules but costs double XP and requires training costs equal to XP+1d10 brass pennies for basic skills or double that for advanced skills. 4. Winds of Magic Spellcasting: All the rules for spellcasting from Winds of Magic. Including the improved Overcasting rules and the new miscasts with arcane marks will be used. 5. Overcasting and Spell Descriptions: Where overcasting is spent to increase, damage, targets or durations those levels don't count towards any SL benefits in the spell description. For instance if you cast Entangle and gain 2 SL you can't both increase the targets (1SL) and improve the entanglement (2SL) 6. Cants: Using a Cant doesn't count as an interruption for the purpose of Channelling. 7. Fencing: A buckler is the largest shield that can be wielded with a Fencing Weapon like a rapier. If you wield a larger shield the Fencing Weapon loses the Fast property. 8. Weapon Length & Infighting: This will be in play along with the optional action of "Manoeuvring" 9. Optional Shield rules: A shield grants its AC bonus even if you defend with the main weapon. 10. Archives Armour: The new armour types from Archives of the Empire 3 will replace the existing ones.

Safety

How TheSword creates a safe table

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay is the original Grim and Perilous adventure. You’ll be dealing with bloody murder, and dark cults, human sacrifice and annoying orphans. You may well swear a bit. It’s an adult game - not in x-rated way but in an I-wouldn’t-want-my-kids-to-hear-this-way. While Nobles may look down on peasants, peasants will bite their thumbs at nobles and everyone hates the witch hunters let's keep it in character and in keeping with the setting. Prejudice may be rife in the Old World but there is no place at the table for real world bigotry of any kind be it misogyny, racism, homophobia or any other kind of exclusionary behaviour. We’ll use Lines and Veils to set some boundaries. For yourselves, but also for me. With the best will in the world there are something’s I won’t do even for money. There will be a link to the groups Lines and Veils Document in the discord chat that will be updated here where possible.
