About the adventure
PCs start as 11th level Heroes of the land. Those who live to the end will be 17th level. The first few scenarios may seem easy, as they are for team-building. After the first act expect both difficulty & casualty rates to increase. Expect a brisk pace, not a slog. You each stand to a King's desperate call for help. For too long the giant clans have raided with impunity. It's time to take the fight to the giants! Your PC's backstory must have some reason to commit to this extremely dangerous endeavor. PCs are encouraged to already know & trust each other. Your GM will be running the classic AD&D modules G1 G2 G3 (Against the GIants) & D1 D2 D3 (Descent into the Depths of the Earth Underdark) & Q1 (Queen of the Demonweb Pits), yet with many changes derived from previous campaigns. Lots of custom content. As a lifelong GM I want to challenge your most optimized PCs. Please build a capable PC without too much cheese. To have any chance you'll need both capable, optimized PCs & optimized play style & skill. Expect a lot of combat. There will also be opportunities for political intrigue, stealth, & espionage. While I'm not wild about multi-classing I certainly shan't forbid it. Just watch out for cheese and by all means avoid cheeze. I.e. I'm fine with a Coffeelock but don't expect to increase spell slots above normal max. It's fine to have absurdly high DPS and great control options but please don't try to build a Bags-of-Holding-Bomb or a peasant rail gun. Expect a high mortality rate. I suggest every player have a secondary PC already in play, just in case the primary PC falls. Even your stupid opponents may exhibit cunning tactics. Expect genius-intelligence foes to dazzle you with stratagems worthy of Sun Tzu. Enemies will not fight fair. 5e rules are remarkably forgiving, and there are many ways to avoid death, yet there are also many ways to bring the final death to even the greatest heroes. One thing that IS off the table is retaliatory attacks versus your PCs friends & family. This is off the table & won't happen. Other than that red line most any scurrilous tactics are in play by the enemy. Be warned. PCs may be any alignment. This party could have a LG paladin teamed up with a necromancer, so long as they can make an effective team and present a unified front. Players should consider talking together in advance to build an optimized party. You'll need every advantage. I charge a bit more because of my expertise. You get what you pay for.

Creating your character
Your GM strongly advises you to field an optimized party suitable as special forces skirmishers versus powerful foes. We'll mostly use the 2024 rules set with full access to 2014+ content. My intent is to use the best of both whilst discarding the dross. This gives you several options for your PC: #1 A Strictly 2024 PC #2 A strictly 2014 PC #3 Reasonable house rules (which you may create) to update 2014 content to 2024. If it's not clear to you how this works I can provide details for what you want to do. I.e. Subclass at 3rd level, etc. Avoid cheesy admixture of the 2014 & 2024 rules set but feel free to improvise in a reasonable way. Feel free to mix 2024 & 2014 options only to the extent it makes sense and doesn't feel like cheeze. For example, your 2024 Champion Fighter should stick to the new versions of Polearm Master & Great Weapon Master, but is free to take the Inspiring Leader feat, which only exists in 2014 rules. Your GM will review your PCs before we start and reserves the right to veto anything in an arbitrary and capricious way. Each PC may choose one Rare and two Uncommon magic items. You're 11th level, after all. No crafting of magic items, you already have your starting toys.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Join my Roll20 VTT and my Discord server. Verify everything works before we start. Talk to other players. Decide on a party composition and who will play what. Build your character.
What Bruce brings to the table
I bring a lifetime of running D&D games, thespian pretenses, appreciation of Sun Tzu's Art of War, and a healthy dose of whimsy. For this campaign you should expect to flex your advanced play skill and still possibly not succeed. Expect brutal fights and Pyrrhic victories. Expect clever foes to come at you in unexpected ways.
Homebrew rules
We'll use the standard 2024 rules with reasonable house rules that include all 2014+ content. I dislike some aspects of 2024 rules but other parts are a big improvement. I.e. Potions are a bonus action, no critical fumbles, In order to keep magic in check I strictly adhere to spell casting rules: one needs a free hand for Somatic component, Vocal components are noisy and obvious, etc.

How Bruce creates a safe table
This will be a very "gamey" campaign so I don't anticipate issues. Players are welcome to contact me at any time with concerns, which I will handle with tact.
