About the adventure

There are rumors of dragons taking captives to their towers and heroes rescuing them, but when the hero’s are burned to cinders, it’s up to you and your fellow captives to discover the secrets and weakness of your captors and escape yourselves. This world is homebrew with stress on elemental magic. I stress a lot of lore, some puzzles, and high RP with low combat. I'll be integrating elements of player backstory into the existing plot. My games tend to be heartfelt, clever, and full of engaged NPCs and external elements. I will commit to writing at least 2k words a week for the game (it's PBP), but will often go over depending on the scene and level of engagement. My most active times are weekday afternoons. Note: My table is one that respects the preferred pronouns of others and never uses hate or derogatory speech in any context. Please do not apply for this game if you cannot respect those rules.

About me

As a DM I strive to make atmospheric and evocative adventures that reward players who think outside of the box. I work as a freelance illustrator, and as a highly visual person imagery and tone play a big part in my games. I create my own art, maps, and custom player character art for my campaigns. Eight years of acting experience combined with a lifelong passion for fantasy writing makes me quick with improv and eager to dive into absurd, creative directions I didn't expect players to go in. I make it my mission as a DM to reward the player's choices and tailor the game to actions they take instead of pushing them along a preordained path. There are set plot points and long-term objectives to my campaigns, but they are always subject to change based on the players goals and decisions. My worlds are heavily homebrewed, and I love tailoring the adventure to the characters' backstories. I am the perfect choice for a player who loves RP! I run an inclusive LGBTQ+ friendly table. Please only apply to play in one of my games if you are willing to respect the pronouns and identities of others.

Character creation

Creating your character

I have a session 0 doc that will go over character creation and am active on the server to answer questions or jump on a voice call. We go over character backstory before starting the game, and there is a lore doc that can help situate you and your character in the world. We'll be starting at level 3 and going to around level 8 or so.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Please send me your discord info so I can add you to the server. You'll need a dndbeyond account, but all other instructions and info should be on the server. Please feel free to reach out with any questions.

What Maria brings to the table

I'm a published writer and add rich description to my worlds, with 6 years of acting experience to add plenty of on-the-ball improv and life to various NPCs. Since my day job lets me work irregular hours, I am often available As a working artist, I do character art for all my PCs. my style/ previous work can be viewed at https://www.mariaoglesbyart.com/#/character-design/

Homebrew rules

Potions: I have a homebrew rule for potions where they are brewed for maximum effectiveness if you follow the instructions on the back of the bottle, which are to drink the potion slowly over the course of at least 6 seconds. If you take a potion as an action, you regain max healing from it. You can choose to take the potion instead as a bonus action, in which case you are swigging it and ignoring the instructions. Because of this the potion isn’t as effective, and you roll to see how much health you regain. Using expended spellslots: If you desperately need to use a spell but do not have slots available to cast it, you can choose to pull from your own life force to cast it. For every level of the spell, you take a point of exhaustion. Ex. if you needed to cast revivify and had no slots left for it, you could take 3 points of exhaustion and cast it anyway. Upcasting: If you want to cast a lower level spell but are out of low level spell slots, you can upcast the spell and expend a higher spell slot instead even if the spell does not specify it can be cast at higher levels. Changing Weapons: You can switch weapons by using half of your movement. I Know a Guy: If you are passing a town, city, or other populated place that your PC could have reasonably had the opportunity to visit before, you can initiate this rule by saying that you know someone in town. You may then proceed to describe your relationship with this individual. I will then roll a D20. How high the roll is will determine how friendly the NPC is towards you. How detailed and believable your summary of your interaction with them is will determine how high or low the DC is to make them remember you fondly. This rule is up to you to initiate and can be used at player discretion.
