About the adventure

SPRK is a game about protecting the world from the forces of evil as a hero or renegade of nearly anything you can imagine. SPRK focuses on heroic moments, cinematic combat, strong characterization, the power of teamwork and friendship, and the idea that the future can be whatever we make of it. At its core, SPRK is a game about hope and heroes inspired by the likes of Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Overwatch, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Soul Eater, Avatar: The Last Airbender/Legend of Korra, My Hero Academia, Young Justice, Pokémon, Fullmetal Alchemist, The Marvel Cinematic Universe, and RWBY. It has been nearly 100 years since peace was struck between the mortal nations of the world and the New Order was put into place on the continent of Volaria. But in that time The Dusk, a force of stagnation and decay which has plagued the world since time immemorial. Creatures of Dusk swarm the world outside the sanctuary cities; killing the people, attacking their cities, and acting as a blight upon the world. Paladins, great heroes of the Paladin Corps, take up arms and use their special powers known as Sparks to protect the world from Dusk as well as other criminal opportunists and enterprises, proud to serve as part of a global organization that has protected the world for hundreds of years. But now, a new threat is rising across the Volarian continent driven by the mysterious new criminal group known as Fulcrum. Though their intentions are unknown, they have been growing in power and influence like a cancerous growth across the face of the continent. The Paladin Corps has assigned team to investigate Fulcrum, discover their goals, and stop whatever they are planning before it comes to fruition. However, their goals may just go beyond mere wealth and control and our intrepid heroes may discover that there is more to this criminal organization than meets the eye...

About me

Hi, I'm Riley! I've been a game designer as long as I can remember and started designing and running tabletop RPGs almost 20 years ago before I even knew how to properly run a D&D campaign and have been learning and growing ever since. Today, I'm an indie video game designer by trade and enjoy running tabletop games as well.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation will be done one-on-one before the game's first session. During this time, players will create their characters with the GM and will work to create their custom Spark playbook; a set of abilities unique to them. These abilities can be strengthened and enhanced over time using gained experience points, but no other player will ever have access to your Spark playbook.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Be sure you have a working webcam and microphone. You'll also want to familiarize yourself with the standard PbtA rules along with the custom playbooks and setting guide written for this campaign which will be sent to players beforehand once joining.

What Riley U. brings to the table

During roleplay, I do a lot of voices and various characters as I work to bring the world of SPRK to life. I will also use music, ambient sound, and custom artwork and maps. Combat is often focused on Rule of Cool and I try to give every player at least one Big Moment per session whenever possible; something they can walk away from the table feeling especially happy about.

Safety

How Riley U. creates a safe table

Before our first session, players will meet one-on-one with me to discuss potentially difficult content or anything they want to warn me about. I am more than happy to modify the plot where needed to accommodate. I have an open door policy when it comes to content warnings and requests for omission of content if it is potentially problematic for any player. I firmly believe in feedback from and for my players. After an event, I like to have a brief moment to come down from the game, discuss what we enjoyed and what we'd like to see improved. At the end of the day, this is a game about teamwork, friendship, and hope. None of those things can flourish in a vacuum.
