About the adventure
Congratulations! Your application to work at the prestigious and world-renown Candlekeep Library has been reviewed and our esteemed council of highly-regarded, well-trained, and only briefly incarcerated staffing experts have approved you for the role of Avowed Adjunct Assistant Associate Class IV (Probationary). Well done! The full orientation will happen upon your arrival, but there some absolute critical rules you should know from the start: 1) All books are not allowed to leave Candlekeep without express written permission. 2) You, however, may at times be assigned to leave Candlekeep to retrieve late books, late fees, or late arrivals. 3) Never – EVER – enter Tower XXIV after sundown. We look forward to your upcoming start date! Please disregard any rumors you may have heard that your admittance is solely because the senior management are desperately scrambling to staff the place after the sudden mass disappearance of the Junior ranks of the Avowed. Welcome aboard, and get ready for an unparalleled learning experience! ~~~~~~~ In this campaign, you and your party are coming in as the newest members of Candlekeep, after some “problems” with the last batch of interns. Perhaps you have applied because your family needs the money, or perhaps because you have longed to read the mysterious tomes locked away within Candlekeep, or maybe you are hiding from someone (or something). Whatever the case, Candlekeep will be your new home for a long time. Fortunately, there are a great many things to keep you occupied during your extended stay.

Meet the Game Master
About me
I have been playing tabletop role-playing games for about 35 years by now, and running them for around 30 years. I've run sessions for as many as ten people down to just a one-on-one adventure. My goal is to always make sure that everyone feels included, feels like their actions have weight to them, and most importantly, has fun. My table is a safe space and LGBTQ+ friendly. I run a combination of both pre-made and homebrew adventures, complete with ambient sounds and character voices.

Creating your character
Characters will be made during Session Zero, but feel free to have an idea of what you want to build ahead of time. The characters will start at Level 1, and if you later decide you want to retcon your character's history, let me know and we will work something out. We will be using the Point Cost method for creating ability scores.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
You will need an account on Roll20, an account on DnDBeyond, and an account on Discord. Webcams are not required, but you are welcome to use them. You can use real dice (we use the honor system) if you want, or the virtual dice in DnDBeyond.
What Matt the Bat brings to the table
Master's Tier subscription on DnDBeyond, so you will have access to the Player's Handbook for free with your account. A Plus Roll20 membership, so lots of space for music, maps, and handouts. Over 30+ years of DMing experience; I make custom maps, custom art, and even custom sfx at times. I will do various voices for characters, have ambient music and sounds for a variety of settings, and even now and then pull off some tricks with layers in Roll20. Anything and everything to deepen the immersion and increase the fun.
Homebrew rules
Critical Hit: 1) Apply max damage (weapon dice + STR/DEX bonus + any other special bonus) 2) Roll weapon damage dice, and add the result Firing into a Crowd: When attempting to use ranged weapons/spells that require a ranged spell attack and: --There is another creature in the adjacent square of the target --AND Said creature is between the attacker and the target --AND Said creature is the same size or larger than the target ...then the attacker has 2 options: 1) Fire normally. When rolling to hit, if the attacker misses the target on a result of 2-10, they hit the intervening creature by accident, regardless of creature's AC. A Critical Fail will still miss completely. 2) Aim to miss the intervening creature. The attacker rolls to hit with disadvantage, but a miss will not hit the intervening creature.

How Matt the Bat creates a safe table
Session Zero will let us define our Lines and Veils, and make any changes/drops/additions to the Content Warnings; the list includes everything that might come up, but I can make changes to drop various elements depending on what people are comfortable with. We will craft your characters as a group; I usually prefer that the characters have some backstory between each other, as it leads to more interesting RP moments and story hooks, but the real important thing is that it makes sense that all of the characters would be working together as a group. The campaign is going to be (mostly) a light-hearted romp through the books and aisles of Candlekeep, using both the adventures from the book as well as custom adventures that tie everything together, and I plan to use as much of your character’s backstories as I can. I like to serve up some of everything in this campaign: a rogue’s gallery of friends and foes, intense fights that come down to the wire, and the chance for the characters to find out the truth of why they happened to be selected, what happened to the previous recruits, and a long-held secret in the heart of the Inner Ward itself.
