About the adventure
Welcome to the Somnium Shard. A sundered paradise; knowledge, gods and power's all known throughout the land, its history coveted by lost tomes, cosmic knowledge and crazed minds. With earliest carvings detailing a different world that may have been the Shard's muse, the inspiration for reality. However not all could be replaced, and the world's panorama was in its own natural discourse, with the residents at home. With that overly grand intro done welcome to my personal world, a multi-year labour of love that I'm still working on with every session, a sandbox type world for players to discover, learn about and influence as they desire. Designed as an open campaign for players to fit into as they wish, follow the threads of their backstory, or start a questline that leads to them swearing loyalty to a kingdom. Whatever it is you feel you want to do in a fantasy world I'll accommodate it as well as I can. However do not think that this means everything is free, the Somnium Shard is still a living and breathing world, thievery, murder and the sort will have consequences, as will trying to steal that magical artifact. You'll have to contend with mages scrying on you, rangers tracking you and bounty hunters after you if you upset the wrong people. So come and join the adventure, see where your characters can take you, how they can evolve and develop in this world with a DM that can handle whatever you feel like throwing at him.

About me
Hello to you all potential players and people just looking around, my names Chaska. I'm a 25 year old DM from South Africa, been playing the game half my life and DMing for a good 9 years now. I'm obsessed with fantasy worlds and games around it, having spent plenty of time digging into everything from usual DnD to Conan, Warhammer, Lovecraft, Dark Sun, Cyberpunk, Shadowrun and much much more. As a DM my approach is very improv based, I love my players exploring everything they can and following threads I lay or even wanting to go out and make their own adventures so I'm rarely caught unprepared for what you all may have planned. I run most games in my own world, personally designed map and all the locations, filled it with as much content thats fun and unique that I could think of. Beyond that I still love running any system in any other world, be it VtM, Cyberpunk or generally just games people like.
View Profile →Character creation
Creating your character
We will handle character creation prior to and in session 0, I'll be discussing the character levels and so on with the group to see where people want to start off, as lvl 1 beginner's or even be a bit more experienced. Characters will be built and used in Roll20 to let the site do the heavy lifting for us math wise. All DnD legal content is available save the usual few things of Satyr's, Silvary barbs and so on, can all be discussed prior to the first session to ensure everyones happy.
There are 4 players in, 3 experienced and one slightly newer. They are a paladin, druid, artificer and bard at level 6, however anymore information I can give you in private messages if you wish to ask.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
A mic will be necessary and a webcam is optional but preferred, I will use mine and like to see the players so we can get a good gauge of body language, I've also found people talk over each other alot less in webcam calls. All I ask is you have a general understanding of the game, if you're new I'll be happy to sit down and run through anything you need to get you into the game and enjoying yourself asap. Come in with atleast a character idea and we can build from there.
What Chaska brings to the table
When I play I like to include as much as I can, I use Roll20 to play and with that comes custom tokens, maps, combat maps, npc images and all the like, I have copies of almost all the DnD content on PDF so I can help any player with anything they need rules or content wise. I'm decent at doing voices and so use them for the NPC's, monsters and so on, however do not expect Critical Role I do as well as I can. Background music and ambience is a given with any situation, be it cave exploration or combat music to keep the tone going. When it comes to rules I like to stick to them being rules as written with lots of homebrew and my own personal checklist. I have a few rules which I adjust from written but those will all be listed out and explained in session 0. There are no surprises and as long as people are willing to learn and so on I'll be forgiving with rare mistakes in game, letting people take back a turn if it hasnt done anything to impactful.
Homebrew rules
- Flanking is changed to be a +3 to attack instead of advantage. (Lets you still gain a bonus from other sources of advantage but rewards tactical movement) - On the first turn in combat when you are brought back from death saving throws you make your saving throws and ability checks with dis-advantage (To combat the meta of revive, down, revive, down) - When you are about to fall 30 or more feet, you may delay the fall until the end of your current or next turn.(Just to let falling be an interaction rather than instant death) - When a wizard transcribes a spell from a scroll into their spell book, make a arcana check of 10 + the spell level to keep the scroll intact after this process. (Just more fun for wizard to gauge spells with) - All potions are a bonus action, including giving it to another player except in strange circumstances (such as underwater combat) - There are more and all will be explained before the first session

How Chaska creates a safe table
In session 0 I would want to get every players view on the game and what they would like in it, I run my game as a realistic breathing world so anything that can occur in our world may occur here. If there is any topic which players are uncomfortable with we will discuss to what extent it will be around or not at all. For example if a player has a fear of spiders, I'll give strong warning which area's may contain spiders so they could avoid it. It will all be cleared first and foremost with the players in session 0 what everyone is cool with, what they want warning off, what they are okay with being faded to black and what needs to be avoided generally. That aside I do like to have check ins after the session just to know how everyone felt about it and what to best do moving forward.
