About the adventure

The air changes first—hot, dry, and tinged with the acrid scent of ash. As your vision clears, the world around you is a twisted mockery of reality. The sky is a seething cauldron of crimson and smoke, clouds roiling like wounds in the heavens. The ground beneath your feet is cracked and barren, the earth itself scarred and bleeding molten rivers that snake through the wasteland. Jagged rocks jut from the ground like the teeth of some colossal, long-dead beast. The horizon stretches into a nightmare landscape of rusted iron and blackened bones. Everywhere, the wind howls with a chorus of distant screams, carrying the smell of burning flesh and sulfur. Far off war machines crawl across the plains, metal beasts belching smoke and grinding bones beneath their wheels. Legions of devils march in disciplined lines, their armor clinking rhythmically, their eyes aglow with hellish light. Shadows flit between the rocks—twisted shapes that seem to evaporate when looked at directly, only to reappear at the edge of your vision. This is Avernus, the first layer of the Nine Hells. A land where hope withers, where the very ground yearns for blood, and where the horizon always seems to close in, as if the plane itself is hungry. - Step into this reconstruction of the official campaign: Descent into Avernus. Enhanced descriptions, new monsters, and an improved plot make this descent into the Hells more dramatic and captivating. Play will start at either level 1 or 5 (depending on what the players want) and ending at around level 13 (depending on what ending the party goes for.)

About me

If I had to pick the one thing that I'm good at, that truly fits what I want to do in my life, it would be Game Mastering. As a young boy I wanted to "Make Video Games" even though I didn't know what that meant (really I wanted to be some sort of executive game designer). In highschool I decided that I wanted to write novels. I honestly prefer DMing to playing, I'm not one of those forever DMs who beg other players to take up the mantle. It lets me do all the fun work of game design, it allows me to create colorful fictional characters, and help a group tell an interesting collective story without having to put in the hard work of putting down hundreds of pages of typed work. Most of my experience IS in Dungeons and Dragons (hence me using DM as opposed to GM out of force of habit). I have a background in Data Analytics, so if you're into economic simulations or tracking ammo, then you'll have DM support behind you. But if you're not into that stuff, then you wouldn't be my first (nor last) group of players who held that preference. I have dabbled a few times in making my own TTRPG systems and I commonly incorporate homebrewed adventures, monsters, and items into my games. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to ask me. I want to make sure that both you and I are in the right kind of group/game.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character Creation will be handled during the second session 0! Standard Array or Point-Buy for stat generation. Roll for Max HP above 1st level. Starting level 3. Ending at approximately level 13. Characters will be on Roll20! You're allowed to use anything from the Player's Handbook, Xanathar's, or Tasha's. If you want to use something from another source, I will probably say no (but I might say yes). You can use either the Custom Lineage rules or previous printings for a race.

The current party

Bard (Eloquence) {Evil Lawyer}, Wizard (Bladesinger) {Crazy Old Man}, Warlock (Celestial) {Nice Goblin Archeologist}, Paladin (Ancients) {Shadar-Kai on a Mission}, Druid (Spores) {} We're a fairly silly party with some room for seriousness.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need a microphone, free Discord account, and free Roll20 account. You should have a general understanding of the basic rules ahead of time. You're responsible for knowing how your features and spells work (though I also know how most of them work). Having a mouse is STRONGLY ENCOURAGED for Roll20 (Though I've known players who made do with either a laptop track-pad, or playing on the web browser on their gaming console, albeit with a decent amount of difficulty).

What Zanoth brings to the table

I have a Roll20 Plus subscription, allowing the use of Dynamic Lighting; and I have purchased content for the adventure, so maps and enemy tokens with art will set up. I occasionally do voices, though it's subtler work than what some people might expect. I do typically utilize music for map ambiance or battle music playlists. I'm not the best tactician, though I love running tactical combat. Apologies in advance if I'm smiling while the bad guys are doing well. Generally I stick to rules as written, though I allow for creative (but not game-breaking) usage.

Safety

How Zanoth creates a safe table

--SAFETY-- X (stop immediately and rewind or skip) and N (I think you're heading toward content that I would need an X card for) cards are added via a plugin on Roll20 and should appear as little buttons at the bottom left. (You may also Discord message me an N, or bring up an X verbally). I also hold an open-door policy at the table. Chances are that life's gonna get in the way for at least one of us. You can also leave early or arrive late if necessary. Just try to send a message so we know you're alive. There will be 2 free session 0's before the game starts. 1 to survey the group, get introductions, any content you want to avoid, anything you want to see in the campaign, etc. (additionally you may always update these wants/needs). 2nd to make characters and backstories. I will coordinate with you to set up time for these session zeros for a week and a half before the first session. -NOPE- Roleplaying sexual harassment or abuse will not be tolerated at the table at all. Additionally, sexual content will be handled with a "fade-to-black" and/or a clinical, but brief, summary.
