About the adventure

Shards of Strife: A Dungeons & Dragons 5e Adventure in Eberron Khorvaire’s a tinderbox, and the Khyber shards are the match. These dark, pulsing relics, scattered from Sharn’s glittering spires to Karrnath’s grim crypts, hold power to reshape the world—or break it. Two factions are at each other’s throats: the Lord of Blades’ warforged army, itching to fire up a city-smashing colossus, and a sinister mind flayer cabal, hell-bent on freeing the mad Daelkyr Dyrrn from his Khyber prison. But something’s off—whispers of a hidden hand stoking the chaos, pushing both sides toward a blood-soaked showdown. In this hard-boiled, pulp-charged saga, you’re the heroes—or suckers—chasing these shards through smoky dives and cursed ruins, unraveling a conspiracy that could torch Eberron. Setting: Khorvaire’s a gritty sprawl of magic and menace, where every city’s got a hustle and every shadow hides a blade. Sharn’s skyscrapers tower over a seedy underbelly of shard smugglers and crooks. Fairhaven’s arcane academies buzz with dangerous secrets, while Korth’s war-torn streets reek of blood and undeath. The Eldeen Reaches’ wilds pulse with druidic mysteries, and the Lhazaar Principalities’ stormy seas breed cutthroat pirates. Thrane’s holy Flamekeep cloaks corruption in piety. The Mournland’s a rare, fog-drenched nightmare, its ruins hiding the warforged colossus and ghosts of the Last War. Beneath it all, Khyber’s caverns writhe with aberrant horrors, where the shards’ true power lurks, waiting to be claimed or destroyed. Themes: Shards of Strife is a pulp-fueled, noir-drenched thrill ride. The Khyber shards thrive on bloodshed, each clash fueling a darker purpose that threatens to unravel Eberron. Trust is a fool’s game—allies turn to enemies, and every deal’s a double-cross. The warforged’s cold, mechanical ambition crashes against the mind flayers’ slimy, cosmic madness, with Khorvaire’s fractured nations—spell-slinging scholars, battle-scarred generals, zealous priests—caught in the fray. You’ll face gut-wrenching choices: back ruthless factions, smash the shards and risk their curse, or hunt a way to cage their power. Every move leaves scars—on the land, its people, and your own battered souls. Adventure Overview: This epic campaign mixes breakneck pulp action with shadowy noir intrigue, delivering a wild ride across Khorvaire’s most dangerous corners. Chase shards through pirate coves, haunted groves, and ancient vaults, dodging warforged enforcers and mind flayer puppets. Outsmart Sharn’s dealmakers, navigate Aundair’s arcane elite, and survive Karrnath’s killing fields. Storm the Mournland to face a towering colossus, plunge into Khyber to disrupt a twisted ritual, and uncover the mastermind behind the chaos. Your choices will spark war or snuff it out—but in this game, even heroes pay a price. Can you seize the shards and save Eberron, or will you fall to the shadows pulling the strings?

About me

I’ve been DMing for about 5 years now. I enjoy high-power campaigns, with lots of magic items. My favorite settings are Eberron and Exandria, and I own most of Wizards’ published campaigns.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation will start at Session 0, and will be completed in PM's before the first session. Stats are rolled (4d6 drop lowest, reroll 1's). Starting level is 3. Eberron: Rising from the Last War is a great starting point for understanding the setting and how it differs from more traditional fantasy settings, and it helps if you limit yourself to species options listed in first chapter of that book. Come to session 0 with 3 character concepts (they don’t have to be fully fleshed out) and we will decide as a group which combination creates a party with the best potential for drama.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Make sure that you have a discord and a dnd beyond account (you need not pay for either). Join the discord server and dnd beyond campaign using the provided links. If you don’t receive or can’t find the links, please message me directly and I will rectify that.

What Chris Walz brings to the table

I have a very healthy library on DnD Beyond, which will be made available to you through sharing. I have some familiarity with the VTT's Foundry and Roll20, and am always working to gain proficiency with such tools. I'm no Matt Mercer, but I do some character voices, and have assigned regional accents to most of the locations in the setting. I try to stick to Rules As Intended, rather than strictly Rules As Written, with plenty of room for the occasional awesome moment that bends said rules. Combat is frequent, and as tactical as I can manage, though I'm not much of a chess player. I also thoroughly enjoy a trapped, puzzled dungeon. Any other questions, feel free to ask!

Homebrew rules

I have extensive homebrew rules inspired by the 2024 5e rules revisions that I will make available in a Google drive. However, if players are uninterested in these rules, they need not be used.

How Chris Walz creates a safe table

I'm very sensitive to my players' personal lines and veils. I don't have a dedicated document, as I prefer players to send such information to me in private messages. I've never had this cause problems with one player broaching another's lines or veils unknowingly, but I do have infrastructure in place to address that situation if it should come up. I'm also always available to communicate, so please feel free to ask if you have any questions.
