Masks: A New Generation | Campaign

About the adventure

Step into the world of MASKS: A New Generation—a high-octane, emotionally charged tabletop RPG powered by the Powered by the Apocalypse system. Here, you’re not just stepping into a cape—you’re stepping into adulthood, armed with powers, pressure, and a past that won’t stay quiet. 🌟 Tell the Stories That Matter – Inspired by Invincible, The Boys, Deadpool, Doom Patrol, and Peacemaker, Masks empowers you to explore identity, purpose, rebellion, and belonging. Whether you're trying to make a name for yourself, escape your legacy, or burn the system down, this is the game where your choices define the narrative. 🤝 Ride the Emotional Rollercoaster – Like in Guardians of the Galaxy or The Suicide Squad, trust is earned the hard way. Your allies might become your found family—or your greatest regrets. Love, loyalty, betrayal, and power all twist together as you fight for something bigger than yourself… or just for survival. 💥 Kinetic, Cinematic Action – Want brutal, stylish, or gloriously over-the-top fights? Masks brings all the reckless energy of a superpowered showdown, giving you the tools to narrate explosive moments that feel pulled straight from a comic book splash page. 🏙️ Shape the City—and Yourself – In a world that sees you as too unstable, too idealistic, or too dangerous, the city becomes your mirror. Corrupt institutions, forgotten streets, secret bases, high towers—they’re all part of your story, and you’re here to shake things up. 🔪 Push Boundaries. Break Rules. Define You. – Like The Tick, Doom Patrol, or Peacemaker, Masks embraces the bizarre, the bold, and the broken. You can tell stories that are funny, tragic, raw, cathartic, or all of the above. You’re not just here to punch bad guys—you’re here to figure out what it means to be good. 🎭 Masks is More Than an RPG – It’s a system that breathes with character growth. Your powers are cool—but your real power is in how you change, how you define yourself in the face of pressure, and how your relationships shape the hero (or antihero) you become. In MASKS, being a young adult with superpowers means walking the line between myth and mess. You’ve got something to prove—and everything to lose. The world’s watching. The city’s cracking. Your story starts now. [[Beginner & LGBTQIA2S+ Friendly]] -------------------------- 📣See what Austin has to say about my GM'ing: "Leland is a fantastic GM. Game style

Roleplay Heavy

“Roleplay Heavy” games place the focus on the story, the characters, and the world they live within, and tend to lean hard into the various roleplaying elements of the game. These games will frequently find the party talking with NPCs, exploring the personal elements of their backstories, or even having emotional moments around the camp fire.

Rule of Cool (RoC)

“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.

Theater of the Mind

“Theater of the Mind” uses little to no visuals for scene settings and combat. Instead, the narrative imagery comes from the Game Master’s descriptions and character action and movement comes from Players’ descriptions.

I haven’t played TTRPGs in years and was nervous to step back into it but Leland made me feel so welcome and really knows how to help relax new players into the game. They take the time to explain where everything is and how the game mechanics work, even when I was struggling with figuring out what buttons to press they were happy to talk me through it and just overall gave a really welcoming and fun environment. The immersive quality to their games is so fun! With different backgrounds and music as well as each character having such a unique personality and even voice to go along with them, it really brings the story to life and makes it feel like so much more! I cannot recommend these games enough and can’t wait for the next session!

Leland is a great DM, very accomodating and open to player ideas. He's perfectly comfortable in both running things by the book and coming with stuff up on the spot. I was immediately blown away by the visual and audio aids he produced for the game we started playing: custom tokens for every player character, a "map" establishing character connections, a full playlist of music to set the scenes, a portrait for each and every NPC players might encounter. He's also great at doing voices: every character we encountered had a distinct voice and manner of speaking. All this really helps immerse yourself into the game. I'd also like to add that Leland knows the rules very well, but also follows the rule of cool. At Leland's table, everyone gets their time to shine. He's friendly, patient and very welcoming — great for both experienced players and beginners alike. Several players in my current group are fairly new to D&D and I can see that Leland is excited to get them acquainted with D&D and help them flesh out their character. If I could select more than 3 tags to describe Leland as a DM, I'd happily do so. If you're looking to join a fun game with a great DM, look no further!

Leland creates a really fun environment balancing roleplay, storytelling and jokes. I don't have too much experience with D&D but Leland made it super easy to fit into a group after their session 0 and made it really easy for me to have a fun and free first session with a big group. Leland has fantastic voices and is really creative, coming up with a hilarious storyline for me on the fly that allowed me to roleplay as well as really bringing some of the carnival to life. Leland also does a great job ensuring the party build inside jokes and there's a real rapport too without making it feel isolating! If you're nervous about starting out, get yourself signed up for a campaign with Leland and you'll have a blast!

How will character creation work

During our initial session, Session 0, we will engage in the collective creation of characters, adhering to the best practices of PbtA (Powered by the Apocalypse) gaming. This process is designed to be an enjoyable and interactive experience, focusing on developing inter-character relationships and collaboratively crafting your team's base of operations. In the event of a new participant joining mid-campaign, we will allocate the beginning segment of their first session to their character introduction. To facilitate a smooth integration, it is preferred that the player and I collaborate to finalize the character's creation prior to the commencement of this session. This approach ensures a seamless entry into the ongoing narrative.
