Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus (Level 1-12)

Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus (Level 1-12)

Dungeons & Dragons 5e | Campaign

About the adventure

The world breathes a tentative sigh of relief. The Cult of the Dragon’s failed attempt to return Tiamat, the Evil Dragon Queen, to the material world left scars across Faerûn, but peace is beginning to settle once more. In this fragile calm, a wedding is set to take place in the radiant city of Elturel—a union between one of the heroes who stood against the Cult and a noblewoman from Baldur’s Gate. The event promises to be a grand celebration, drawing guests from every corner of the realms: merchants, dignitaries, adventurers, and more. But beneath the surface, shadows gather, and not everyone attending the festivities comes with goodwill in their hearts. Elturel, once famed as the home of the Hellriders, now faces an uncertain future. The Hellriders, legendary for their valor and dedication to justice, have fallen into disgrace after their failure to stop the Cult of the Dragon’s machinations. In their place, the Order of the Gauntlet has stepped up to secure the city, bringing with them their unwavering discipline and sense of duty. Yet, even with these new guardians, whispers of infernal schemes and hidden dangers ripple through the streets of Elturel, hinting at forces that seek to drag the city into a deeper darkness. DM Notes: Level Range: This campaign runs from level 1 to 12. Players will begin “on their way” to the wedding at Elturel, setting the stage for intrigue and adventure. Faerûnian Lore: Expect a rich dive into the world of Faerûn, with devils and the Nine Hells taking a prominent role. My interpretation of devils leans into their cunning and charm—beautiful and manipulative rather than overtly violent. Violence, for them, is rarely the first or second choice. Campaign Style: This is “total D&D,” featuring a mix of everything: intense combat, intriguing mysteries, challenging puzzles, immersive roleplay, and a host of diverse NPCs to interact with. Will you safeguard the fragile peace forged after the Cult of the Dragon’s defeat, or will unseen forces drag Elturel—and perhaps all of Faerûn—into the depths of Avernus? The city of light may yet find itself at the mercy of powers far greater than its brightest champions could imagine. The choice, and the consequences, are yours.

How to prepare

Players will need a working computer, a roll20 subscription, a mic, and a headset. D&D beyond is optional.

What I provide

- I have content sharing for D&D Beyond and Roll20, with most of the rules and character creation content books purchased. - I consider the rules to be a guideline, but I aim for consistency. Most of my homebrew rules are written down on my Discord server. If you're interested in only playing rules as written then this game won't be for you. - D&D 5e (or 5.5) is not a well-balanced combat system. Expect some encounters to be too easy and others to be too hard. I'm a big believer in: "there's always an alternative to combat." Murder-hobos, you've been warned. - I'm not great at character voices, I try my best, but I'm not great. I try to focus more on visuals and world-building. I spend a lot of time building maps and character tokens and writing backstories.

Gameplay details

I find session 0's to be very important. We will go over your characters, their motivations, who they are, their backstory, etc. Part of the appeal of TTRPGs versus video games is that the world responds differently to your character. You can expect that I will test your character's principles in a variety of ways.
