Prelude - A One Ring 2ed Newcomers Adventure

The One Ring 2e | Campaign

About the adventure

Arise Rider, "Prelude" is a gripping mini-campaign set in Middle-earth, unfolding between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Tasked by a renowned patron, you and your fellowship will find yourselves entangled in a web of mystery and intrigue - one with the power to alter the course of the beloved story as we know it. This adventure begins in-canon and lore-friendly, but once your journey starts, the future is in your hands. Every choice you make can shape Middle-earth in ways both great and small. Your fellowship has complete autonomy - your actions, your legacy. New to The One Ring 2nd Edition or tabletop roleplaying? Not a problem. This is a Learn-to-Play campaign, completely free, with all necessary materials provided, no prior experience or purchases required (I can suggest stuff if you'd like though). Gameplay will emphasize immersive storytelling, deep roleplay, and the thrill of adventure, all within a dynamic, open-ended sandbox where danger and intrigue lurk in every shadow. Are you ready to leave your mark on Middle-earth? Interested but the scheduling doesn't work? Still have questions unanswered? Want to suggest something or chat about it? Just say hi and we'll take it from there, I'm always looking for new players and starting different games/settings. "Ride now, ride now, ride! Ride for ruin and the world's ending!"

Game style

Rule of Cool (RoC)

“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.

Rules as Written (RaW)

Games that are ran “Rules as Written” emphasize realism and stick to the letter of the rules, allowing players to explore creative solutions while still operating under a consistent rule set. Players have the ability to utilize the rules in creative ways to create awesome characters and moments in the game.

How to prepare

A microphone and a desktop or laptop capable of running Foundry VTT are expected, something with Windows 10, 8GB/16GB RAM, and a GPU. Not sure if your setup will work? No problem—reach out, and I’ll help you sort it out. I’d REALLY appreciate it if you have a camera and are willing to turn it on, it makes a huge difference in setting the mood and bringing everyone closer at the (virtual) table. Not comfortable using it at first but open to the idea as the game progresses? That works for me.

What I provide

For this game, I’ll be using Foundry VTT, ambient music, visual representations (some char pics, locations and maps), and a cinematic approach to narration. I'm by no means an expert in Tolkien lore but I know my way around ME and it's awesome history. We will talk, A LOT. I’m not a stickler for rules, but I am a sucker for twists and I’ve been known to back myself into a corner by rolling with players’ plans. I like to surprise and be surprised, I don’t script my sessions; I have a plan, but the story moves where we all take it. Expect the Rule of Cool.

Gameplay details

In our one-on-one pre-game meetings, I'll check with you to see if there are any topics or boundaries I should keep in mind while preparing and running the game. The content warning tag-list doesn't necessary reflect what is going to happen but serves the purpose of informing you what could within my own personal boundaries. In this game I adhere to Tolkien's view that yes, there is Evil and Good in the world, and also something in between, but Evil will do evil things. There will be no sexual content and tolerance and respect towards players is expected - you know, the basic human requirements. I want you to have fun, but I also want to make an impact—to challenge you, make you think, and immerse you in the story on a deeper level. Roleplaying can get intense, with tough choices and consequences that leave a lasting mark. That’s why, if needed, I’ll always be available after sessions for debriefing, support, or just to talk things through.

How will character creation work

We'll develop characters (backgrounds, sheets, etc) in one/two pre-game sessions. I like fleshing out the characters so be ready to be challenged (just enough) to really think about this person you want to play as. If you already have a char, we'll chat on how to best integrate in this mini-campaign.
